True HID kit for 7" round pop ups

So...I was thinking and thinking...many people have been asking around for a true HID kit for our 7" round sealed beams.

Well...I think I may have found a solution...that should be less then $300.

Here are my thoughts...if you do the H4 bulb conversion first...so your 1st gen now takes an H4 bulb....logic would say...since your car now takes an h4 bulb...it should be able to take a HID h4 bulb right?

So...I am in the middle of working with a company on getting H4 HIDs onto my car. I will let my car be the guinea pig and see how it goes. If it is a success, I will share the pics and info and get all interested parties on board.

If you already have the H4 bulbs on your 1st gen...then it should be plug and play....

Gimme a couple more weeks...I dont have the money!

Also...if you are local to So Cal they can install for you for a small fee...and takes less than an hour or so. :fingersx:

So fingers crossed this will work and work very easily...and anyone can have true HID w/ ballasts and ignitors etc...the whole shebang.

Pics of finished product would be great

Since I will be the "guinea pig" for this set up I promise to take lots of pics of the parts and the install....hang tight!

mikewoodkozar 12-14-07 02:19 PM

Awesome, cant wait

TeamSMS 12-14-07 02:26 PM

Sweet...cant wait to see some pics. HID's would be nice...

82transam 12-14-07 03:00 PM

If you use the H4 housings though won't the light pattern be all over the place? HID's need specific projectors to work correctly don't they?

shiet, for around $300, I can get a clean shell.

For $300 I can find hookers that'll actually kiss me on the mouth. :rlaugh:

That is a good question. I will ask the installer dude from the HID kit company about that.

Apparently they have done tons of conversions before with no problems...but I def ask about the light output.

as for wacky and 85 FB way to hijack my thread bastids! :fawk:

EDIT = as for the $300 price it is only a estimate right now...but that is the cheapest around for a full kit meaning...

7" Round H4 replacement housings - $65-$100 depending on where you go!

HID kit (bulbs, ballasts and wires) $200

Can't wait. I've been meaning to upgrade my lights for months.

Jeezus 12-14-07 05:11 PM

I was about to say.. Wouldn't you need to upgrade the electricals?

the kit as I know it is plug and play. I am sure they use some sort of harness with better wires to run the ballasts. Like I said I hope to be the first one to make this work.

It just makes sense to me...H4 bulbs = H4 HIDs right? Well...lets hope so!

TeamSMS 12-14-07 05:49 PM

Hopefully this can actually be made because i am very interested in an H4 HID headlight system.

waking the dead

Did anyone ever finish this project or something like it? I was going to do this with a black dragon wiring harness, infiniti fx45 complete hid setup, H4 to D2S/D2R Adapters, and ebay 7" round headlights (undecided on lens color, housing color, projectors).:dunno:

thunkrd 04-16-09 11:47 AM

hids would be nice, but i think its not necessary. just get some good replacement lights. you'll only be out 35 dollars instead of 300.

Stock alternator seems to have as much as it can barely handle running normal headlights, wipers, and vent fan on rainy nights...

Sgt Fox 04-16-09 11:49 PM

You still won't have a proper HID. There will be no projectors with the correct cutoff of a legal HID system.

I agree, without projectors the beam is going to be too unfocused and pointless, it'd be just as good to have a 1 million candl spotlight bolted to the hood. Part of the HID systems are the projectors which focus the light into a nice tight beam. Or at least that's my understanding.

Yes true HID with Hella H4 housings.

mazdaverx713b 04-17-09 01:36 AM

^^^well they look damn nice

Kerebrus 04-17-09 01:57 AM

Thank you sir.

thunkrd 04-17-09 02:08 AM

have you gotten pulled over for them?

I've been pulled over many times and yet I've never been given any hassle about the HID lights. Even so if I ever did I would just say that I upgraded my lights because the stock ones didn't do any justice for me at night

thunkrd 04-17-09 02:57 AM

ah ok. i guess they just pull over hondas for headlights.. haha

WAS:12A 04-17-09 04:31 AM

I have a full HID kit in my 85 Rx-7.

My car came from the factory with the H4 globes, so it was a easy swap with plug and play.

The lights are angled correctly, so I have never had any drama's from the police and they look just like Kerebrus's...

The light is reflected perfectly across the road from one side to the other...the improvement in light from the factory H4's is FUCKING AWESOME!!!...you don't need any other "reflector" set up.

Cam...

Kerebrus 04-17-09 11:27 AM

Agreed, Cam is the man :icon_tup:

2 Attachment(s)
(the Philips D2S or D2R HID bulb to be used on a standard H4 headlamp housing, such as motorcycle or aftermarket automotive style housing has correct beam alignment shield to project light from the HID lamp to the road, eliminating upward glare). This is the adapter I am considering to use. it will direct the light to the road and avoid having a spot light. please let me know your thoughts.

FYI, hid's use much less voltage when on than a standard bulb. It uses quite a bit for the inital strike, but almost nothing while on.

So you were planning on using just the metal shield from those bulbs on a new HID kit, or what? That looks like a great Idea... I just wouldn't want to pay all that money to get bulbs with shields if I wasn't going to use the actual bulbs. Can you buy the shields individually?

chepx7 04-19-09 11:40 AM

shield comes separate from the bulbs but its only $23 with shipping. the heading on ebay is (H4 to D2S/D2R Adapters for Philips Xenon HID bulbs 9003).

mojave 04-19-09 12:10 PM

Awesome, I'm going to have to keep that in mind.

Jeezus 04-20-09 12:46 PM

See if you can get it down less than $200

Kerebrus 04-20-09 12:55 PM

Those housings are junk. I got my HID kit for about $135 (top brand), housings for $40.

black dragon auto sells some light harness that takes care of that problem, tg ferrell did a nice write up comparing using the stock bulbs with and w/out the harness.
