transmission unmount question
 

I'm working on pulling my tranny for a clutch replacement and Mr. Murphy showed up very unexpectedly. I went to loosen the transmission crossmember and when I applied the impact wrench to the 17mm nuts that attach the crossmember to the body expecting them to zip off, or be real stubborn and require some heat (this is where Mr. Murphy stepped up). The nut and washer are turning together :wallbash:

So, I pulled back the carpet hoping there was a bolt head I could latch onto but it doesn't come through the floor. The mounting bolt goes into a welded on and sealed up bump on the bottom of the floor boards.

My question is this;

Is this bolt a stud that will come out ok if I keep zipping with the impact wrench

or

Is it supposed to be permanently attached inside this bump and now its turning on me which means I'm having fun now :)

Anyone else ever have this happen ?

if the stud comes out no biggie, just pretend its a bolt when reinstalling it. Don't worry about it, happens all the time, the nut rusts to the stud and it all comes out as one, not a problem at all. good luck

Ah, very cool. Thanks for the info. So its really just a stud, thats a relief.

Take a screwdriver and leverage under the washer then slowly back the bolt out. It worked for me .

Good to know. I need to swap out my tranny mount soon, but I'm hoping it will go without a hitch (yeah, right).. :)

Well, in my case the nut, stud, and washer have become one (from rust) and I think I'll just fab up replacements when I reinstall. Looks pretty basic, just need to isolate the mount with some rubber so it keeps the body from buzzing. Typical old car repair 101.

I believe 84-85 cars just used a bolt, rather than the stud/nut combo. If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em.........
