Transmission Sensor

Hey guys I am wondering what the gold sensor is on my 82 manual transmission? There is a green and a red wire that go to it. Can I get rid of this. Also there is a blue wire in this same spot that apparently isnt going to anything. The only other wire is the black one that goes to the starter solenoid. What does that one do exactly. Thanks

This might help. It will tell you exactly what each wire is.

No luck on that diagram. although it may look like it has to do with hot starting. Someones got to know since we all have it =)

Since the manual transmissions are almost identical across all the years I can tell you that on the 84-85 there are two switches. One for backup and one for neutral. The purpose of the backup switch is obvious. I don't know what neutral was supposed to be used for. It could have been to prevent starting while in gear but I know you can do that. I suppose it could be to disable the cruise if you popped it into neutral by accident.

So unplug it and see if your backup lights no longer work.

The starter needs a good ground and a good connection to the battery positive and a signal from the start switch. That black wire is one of those. The ground usually runs up to a connection at the left wheel well near the strut tower and then to the battery. The positive goes straight to the battery positive terminal.

The sensors/switches on the 1985 trans are:

Neutral switch
plug 1 = Green/Yellow
plug 2 = Yellow/Blue

Over Top Switch
plug 1 = Blue/White
plug 2 = Black

Clutch Switch
plug 1
connector 1 = Green/Yellow
connector 2 = White/Red

I have a 79 and have several transmissions, some have two extra switches. When I took one apart I discovered that the extra switches were on 4th and 5th gears. I think they were maybe used on california cars that required additional emission controls. Anyway I use them to disable my e fan cause I figure I don't need it at highway speeds.
