Transmission Question

Im not sure if transmission is broken, and before i go out and buy another one, i want o make sure that this one tranny i have is no good...

I have a S4 turbo II tranny sitting on the floor that i yanked out of car...At first i thought it was the tranny that blew, because when i would it into gear the car wouldn't go...

Come to find out i destroyed the rear end...and snapped an axle...For precaution reason i went ahead a swapped out the tranny anyways cause one i had a spare sitting on the floor, and it was already out of the car...

I put the new one in and that tranny is broken...it will not go into 3rd 4th 5th or reverse and it is some what hell into get into 1st and 2nd...

The tranny on the floor goes into all the gears smoothly, and switches gears great with not problems...The input shaft spins nice...
But here is my question...When i have the transmission in gear for example 1st 2nd or 3rd is the input shaft allowed or able to spin by hand when i spin it with my hand?

I just want to make sure, because if that is the case, i will throw that tranny back into the car and save my money instead of buying another turbo II tranny...

Thanks in advance for any help...

If theres nothing in the tail end attached to it to hold it back (since its out of the car)
then yeah you can spin it by hand, should spin fairly well if its in good shape I
would think. You could stick the drive shaft yoke in there and try to spin it and
you should feel a lot of resistance and if you try hard enough the yoke will spin
the drive shaft.

You could even spin it carefully up front and count how many times the yoke turns
over to check your ratios, if your that bored that is :)

Yup, the tranny that i should have left in there was fine...and that is the one that i thought is broken...thank you for the help...The one that i swapped in is broken, doesn't spin in gear...

Getting ready to swap the other back in...

thank you for the help
