tranny is shot.
 
The tranny on me SE has been making a loud noise lately. It makes the noise when the car is just idling and the clutch pedal is NOT engaged. As soon as you push the clutch in, the noise goes away. When I drained the oil, it kind of confirmed that the tranny is bad. The oil looked like gray metallic paint. I even changed this oil last year with redline synthetic. Anyway, I am replacing the clutch and flywheel, so I guess this is a good time to get a good used tranny.

I have a couple of questions concerning the clutch and flywheel, so that when I do the job I have all the parts on hand and don't have to stop in the middle of it. The FSM says to replace the eccentric shaft oil seal if leakage is noticed. I don't know if I have any leakage until I get the flywheel off, but is this something that normally needs to be replaced? Pilot bearing----I read that some of you say to leave it alone. I hate not replacing things when I have the chance, but at the same time, I don't want to open up a can of worms. Is it really that bad?

sounds like your noise may be the throw out bearing. When you remove it spin the bearing and see if it feels gritty/rough. make sure you put the pilot seal in the correct way or it won't seal properly.

The throw-out bearing seems ok. Remember the noise goes away when I push the clutch in, which tells me that it's not the throw-out bearing.

I have the same problem, I'm gonna buy a rebuilt/used tranny soon along with clutch and possibly flywheel. I'm not sure what the problem is either, but when I push the clutch in, it goes away. When you put the new tranny on and clutch, you should do a tutorial for the archives.

The replacement of the pilot bearing and or rear engine seal depends on the last time it was serviced. If the rear engine seal has not been replaced since you owned it then replace it as PM. Also have to look at how much work it is to R & R a transmission and decide whether or not to replace key components when in there. I always replace the pilot bearing, T/O bearing, pilot seal and rear engine seal when I am in there.

I also inspect the front and rear transmission seals and transmission mount.

that you direct you that the noise IS the throwout bearing. the t/o bearing dides on the sleeve of the trans input shaft and makes direct contact with the fingers on the clutch pressure plate. when the clutch pedal is released, the bearing spins freely with no load. when the clutch pedal is depressed, the bearing makes contact with the fingers on the pressure plate and is put under a direct load and the noise will be supressed. the transmission is most likely fine and the issue sounds like your throwout bearing is shot. a very common faileure on the SA and FB's.

Could be the bearings in the transmission. Listen to see if you hear the noise as you drive. If you do you may not hear it in 4th. Also, check to see if you have silver sludge on your drain plug.

i just replaced my pilot and seal and that noise went away

i have the same problem but my 5th pops out too...i'm just picking up a clutch kit and all the above that was mentched, plus a used tran...

i think you have it backwards unless the mazda trans is different than most other transmissions. mjm4jc is correct i believe.
