What is the transmission code for my 82, it is an automatic. I have searched, can't find it. Also, does anyone know of a shift kit made for the automatics? I really don't need fifty posts on swapping to 5 speed or automatics suck (read enough of them in the searches I did). Thanks.

All Mazda automatics were made by JATCO (Japan Automatic Transmission Company)

79-83 3 speed it's a 3N71B
84-88 4 speed it's a L4N71B
89-92 4 speed it's a N4AEL
93-96 4 speed it's a R4AEL

Te L4N71B and N4AEL look alot alike the difference is the L4N71B is hydrolicly contrlled shifts the N4AEL is electronicly controlled shifts.

The 3N71B was also used in all automatic Mazda from 73 to 83 and most 71-85 Nissan and a few Fords.

The L4N71B was also used in 84-89 Nissan and some Mitsubishi some of these had a E4N71B that had an electronicly controlled torque convertor but that was the only difference BUT the RX7 never used the E4N71B.

Mazda was the only company to use the N4AEL.

The R4AEL is almost identical to the Nissan RE4R01A.

I'm unsure of any shift kits made for them anymore but there used to be some many years ago MAYBE one day I'll post some mods that can be done to all the JATCO's to improve shift quality.

Well you gotta remember that's what I do for a living is rebuild transmissions so I have most of that info available to me. As for the shiftkits I do my own mods but haven't documented them yet so after I get a few things setup I'll outline the mods needed to do each one for improved performance and hopefully get some contact info for custom high stall convertors for 7's as well.

but I've been searching forever to find information to build up the L4N71B that's in my 1984 maxima..

Do you think it's possible to build the tranny up to hold ~300 horsepower reliably?

sloppy slow shifts creates heat in autos and is the main cause of death for them at high power levels. get the valve body modified to hold higher pressure, fresh clutch packs (not sure if these use packs) double packed clutches, large tranny cooler and a bored out torque converter should hold up fairly well.
