Tranny busted

So, I go out to start my car, get it warmed up, put it in reverse....Bam! Hmmmm, try reverse again, nuthin, try 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th(5th don't work) and it moves.
So finally after 5 years of driving with 5th growling at me everytime I try to use it, it finally gives up the ghost. Got 2 spares in the shop. I drop the old one and found that the tranny mount was busted... I put in the TII throwout bearing and hang the new tranny and wow. I don't have growl, no vibration,5th gear works, nice and quiet when I drive now.
I know, I'm such a loser to wait so long. I figured it would give out drifting but, it held up really well considering the abuse I gave it.

Anyway, that's the story.

Word to the wise, use the TII throw out bearing if you do a 12a or 13b clutch or tranny swap.

why a tII throw out bearing?

Rx-7Doctor 02-21-07 07:23 PM

I don't see what the T/O bearing has to do with it? There is a difference between the N/A t/O bearing for 86-88 and the 86-88 TII, but what that is I don't know?

I would say the moral of the story is to change the Trans "Before" it goes Kaboom!LOL.

TII throw out bearing is beefier and it fits, why not if you can. I use a a 88 na clutch kit for my 82' 12a and I like the slightly stiffer pressure plate, nice to have grab when you need it.
I guess for drifting or 1/4 mile stuff the TII t/o bearing is better then stock.

I am assuming that it is all bolt-n-go?

Slammed_GSL 02-21-07 09:26 PM

You are correct, no mod required, it just pop's on.

84RX_Se7en 02-21-07 09:34 PM

And the TII pressure plate/clutch is all bolt and go?

Rx-7Doctor 02-21-07 09:35 PM

^ No!

84RX_Se7en 02-21-07 09:44 PM

AH, I see. I need to read better. ;)
N/A from '88. Now... are they any better than the stock GSL-SE clutch kit and pressure plate?

Rx-7Doctor 02-21-07 09:49 PM

No, they are not. The clutches (225mm) are the same from 83-92 N/a.

Slammed_GSL 02-21-07 10:58 PM

He is correct, turbo plate and clutch are not the same.....

I had to come in here and read the story, and its because you had the smiling happy guy wearing sun glasses next to a thread thats titled "tranny busted." I guess people see problems differently.
