Top mount starter for 13b motorcycle
Just wondering if it is possible to do a change over from the bottom mount starter on a 86 gsl 13b to a top mount without major changes and if so are they or can they be a good set up .
Reason for wanting to change over is the bottom mount starter tends to stick out a bit more than I would like . Also being out that far on a cross mount setup tends to make the bike center of gravity to far off .. Everything seems to balance out nice with the starter sitting on top. Thanks :) Gerald m. |
Wait... You have a 13B in a motorbike? :icon_tup:
HD frame and transmisson? Sorry if I am off topic. |
Some of the early rotaries (-pre '78) had top mount starters, that's what the odd cutout above the oil filter pedestal is for, they kept it in the castings.

Too many Newfie jokes out there... Makes 'em shy unless they are in groups.
I live in SoCal and even I've heard of Newfie jokes. |
That intake looks nice, but with the Carb on it, doesn't it interfere with something? Seems very tall.
Also, a two barrel Holley is going to perform very poorly on a 13B. Simply not enough air and fuel. Perhaps you could go with Fuel Injection and save alot of room, and make much more power? Congrats on the build so far. |

Not even I know about top mount starters, unless it's for the old twin dizzy 12A, which has a ring gear that is about 10mm forward or rearward of all 74 and later flywheels (can't recall which direction but remember it makes it incompatible). So I'd ask Atkins since they do top mounted starters on 74 and later engines for boats and what not. Also some race cars back in the 80s had small top mount starters. j9fd3s may have seen some.

I have had a few top mount setups. I still have a 4 speed gearbox with top mount starter (bell housing is removable like the later turbo models). The starters were very large and heavy. The automatic transmission starters were the heaviest of the two as the field coils were larger so they spun faster.

Interesting , Well i would like to stay as light as possible but a couple pounds extra would be worth it . So either starter will work for the same application ? would it work with my auto trans flywheel If I put a taper on the back side of the teeth ? I would buy one from a forum member but maybe napa could get one , by the time I pay shipping I could put the extra into a new guy . Even the bottom mount are different between auto and standard ( brushes anyway ) .. Thanks for your time and input :) Gerald m. |
