Tokico Illumina's

Just put a set on my 85. I have two questions regarding them.

My first question is, what setting do they arrive on from the factory so I can put the dial on the correct way.

Second is, has anyone modified the rear trim piece that covers the rear shock to allow access to the adjuster?

Just looking for some ideas. Thanks in advance.

darthrotary 11-08-11 01:24 PM

Ok, Tokico says factory setting is to "full firm" which I am assuming is 5. Is this correct?

rwatson5651 11-08-11 02:02 PM

When I installed them on my '79 I drilled holes in my rear interior pieces so I could get to the adjusters with a screw driver and used covers from my stock front shock tower to cover the holes. My interior is black so the shock tower covers match and nobody ever notices that I cut holes in my interior!

The dial should only go on one way. There is a flat side of the top of the shaft and the plastic dial has a flat side. Line them up and your good to go.

Can I ask for you to take a pic to get a rough idea of what it looks like.

Robert, that is actually funny to see you drilled the covers I have done the same thing to 2 rx7s. I used an awl to mark where to drill while the shocks were off then a hole saw to make the hole for the caps.

Post pics here. Share people lol. I need to that. All four of my illumina shocks came to me at setting 4.

What do you guys run your shocks at?

I didn't even notice they came factory at 5... no wonder my car has been such a pain in the ass to drive

We must think alike, thats exactly what I did!!

I run mine on the softest setting on the street and on the most firm when I on any kind of track or places like the Tail of the Dragon.

Thing corners like champ but with the shocks set at 5 it's (literally) a pain int he ass to drive on regular roads... My buddy put in my front shocks, how hard is it to get the covers off to adjust?

2GSLSE 11-11-11 07:17 PM

I run my shocks at 2 or 3 most of the time and have the coilovers from re-speed (250#fr 125#r) it is firm but a good firm. the covers just pop off to adjust the shocks it is the black plastic cover on the strut tower under the hood.

Seems like we just put the tokico hp (blues) in that car! You might want to hang on to the hp's just incase you decide the illuminas are to harsh.

the shock setting depends on the spring, if you have 150-175 springs try 2-3, stock spring try 1-2

in the front there are two different inserts, the Rx7 insert and the Mr2 insert, the Mr2 is valved for higher spring rates, so those of us with 300+ lbs springs should be on the Mr2 set.

on the Rx7 set with stock springs, try 1-2-3, if you have RB/eibach/etc springs its probably going to be 2-4. if you have 200+ probably 4-5

sam dynoed the Mr2 shocks, and in a light car with 350# springs i'm at 3 all the way around, it handles great, and it rides nicely too

don't be afraid to try all of the settings though. try 5 and then try 1, and then try 4 and then 2 and then 3, and see what works

I'm on the RB springs. At 5 the ass end starts acting like a trampoline at highway speeds... unnerving really. I've been running them at 2 for a few days now, might try 1 later on... I could see turning them up to 3-4 for autocrossing though.

2-3 should be about right.

I have RE Speed coilovers front and rear with 300 lb. front springs and 150 lb. rears. I have my Illuminas set at 3 in the front and 2 in the rear.

I apologize for the poor quality, my camera crapped out on me.

Shredduuhh 11-21-11 10:04 PM

I'm thinking about that set up for my SA. I want to do a brake conversion to.

darthrotary 11-22-11 07:29 AM

Thanks rwatson!
What did you use to make the cap?

rwatson5651 11-22-11 07:55 AM

Thats the cap off the original front shock.

darthrotary 11-23-11 05:28 AM

lol, sweet thanks again
