Tire Size Question

What size of a 17 inch tire could I get away with under a GSL-SE?

Manntis 02-20-03 02:47 AM

'get away' in what sense? Crappy steering and sensitivity to bumps?

SilverRocket 02-20-03 03:22 AM

Not many of the North American guys run that kinda size... but it's common in Australia I believe. You'll need to roll your fender lips of course.

You'll likely want something like 17x7 and 205/40-17 (just a guess off the top of my head, don't place too much faith lol), but do all the calculations to compare tire diameter, etc. You'll want to keep the diameter as close to stock as possible.

215x40x17

thats what i have

p/s the steering is fine!

40 offset on the wheel
could go wider in the back if you want

Disregard what I said and listen to the guy who knows:)

215 - I thought 205 was the max at the front end before rubbing becomes a problem? Does 215 assume a particular non-stock suspension setup?

my car is lowered, no rubbing but the fenders are rolled

When I went from stock to 16" I noticed the steering was now sensitive to every bump and lump in the road.

since tires are part of the suspension then you will. 60series sidewalls absorb far more then you realize.

I run a 225 40 16 Yokohama A520 with a slight lip roll. Almost 300hp and I was amazed at how well it hooks up. G-Tech Pro: 13.01@117mph

I realize it :) 680rwhp said his steering was fine, however, at 17" so I had to post my experience with 16"...

J Oliver 02-22-03 02:17 PM

The muffler is a Magnaflow part# is for Dodge Cummins disel. canister dia.:9.25inch
inlet and outlet are:4 in 5 out
Tip is stainless with 3/16 inch wall material and is from Beckers Milk factory. It was a part from the processing plant, it is tapered from 5 inch to 6 inch and is "slashed" cut then Tig. on to muffler. I have yet to see another.
GOT MILK?????????????????
I do!!!

Manntis 02-22-03 02:54 PM

I notice that fartcan tip is melting your bumper...

J Oliver 02-22-03 03:32 PM

No it is not. The exhaust is off at the turbo causing the muffler to tilt up. The discoloration is exhaust soot from running race fuel from Mosport Raceway. Thanx for the concern though!

Manntis 02-22-03 03:35 PM

I wonder if Ontario DMV would let you extend the tip a bit to clear the rear bumper?

J Oliver 02-22-03 07:50 PM

Check this out!!!!! After the car warms up and Im driving it the tip extends almost 2 in. past the bumper, must be the 304 ss I think it has a extreme expansion rate. YA THINK!!!!!!!!!!!

J Oliver 02-22-03 07:52 PM

Oh ya the exhauust is 304 ss rotor hsg. back 15feet?

RotorMotorDriver 02-22-03 08:47 PM

The whole back right side of my car looks like that little bit on his, and I dont even run race gas. I dont know why mine does it .

Oh yeah, and anyone wanna give me some deailed info on rolling fender lips? Ive heard of it done alot, but when I look at the cars, I dont see a difference (I guess they did a good job ;)). I have a feeling its just litterly rolling the fenders out of the way, but does anyone have any detailed pics (before and after maybe?) or a how to or something? Not important, Im just trying to learn :). Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing, and I don't see any difference either, lol :dunce:

If it is what I am thinking, it is the lip that bends inward about half an inch. All I did with mine is bent them back so that they were not going to touch the tires if I hit a bump. the first pic shows the lip on the back wheel well and the second pic shows the front with the lip bent in so you cant see it.
