Tire Choice for GSL-SE?
Ok, I just got back from making a run on Palomar Mt. today and noticed this nice bulge/crack in the sidewall of my passenger side front tire. So I'm thinking this will speed up my "replace the pos tires that the car came with when they wear out" idea. Any suggestions on what tire to get? This car is not my primary vehicle and is mainly for going out and having fun but I am trying to keep it in original condition and want to stick with 205/60 R14. Oh the previous owner has some road hugger 185/60R14 on it now - Yikes! So far Dunlop SP Sport A2 and Sumitomo HTR 200 are in the running. Please advise.

I'm running 205/50R16 Pirelli P7000s and I love 'em. Gobs of grip and they break away gradually so you don't get sudden loss of traction. Seemed to like the autocross course too, though they did squeal something fierce on it for the first time since I got 'em...

that's Pirelli for ya' ... actually, weren't the P6's an option from the factory (on the SE's)? anyone?
Pirellis grip like hell, but they are quite noisy! i don't mind it, just thought i was the only one that noticed. i used to run P6's on my 83 with SE suspension. as for the original question. i found that it was hard to find "decent" tires in the 205/60 size. the last good tire that i found in that was Yokohama's AVS Intermediate, but that's discontinued now. i think they make another AVS series tire in that size, but i've never used it. however, i would blindly recommend it based on my experience with the AVS-Intermediates. |
I would try the new Yokohama ES 100. They're the replacement for the A520 and the AVS Intermediate B. I've used both the old versions and am eager to try the new ES when my current tires die.

I know the name sounds weird, but I've been running Akuret GTX 205/60 x 14's for over two years and they're good tires.. made by a division of Yokohama, I think. They're good looking, good in dry or wet conditions, and are very sticky (240AA tire rating) yet after two years they show very little wear. I think they run about $70.

Avs ES 100's
Had them on now for a couple months......
205-60-14 on stock SE Rims... Very sticky......I have a new car again.......... Does not drift on the freeway......very stable at 100mph... 85 GSL-SE 86k |

i've also heard the kumho supra (712?)'s are pretty good for the price, although i've yet to try them. when i get new rims, i'm probably get either those or the pirelli p7000's. there's something to be said about a tire that doesn't squeal loudly.... the ones i have now (regul sport challengers, cheap and longlasting) chirp when idling around parking lots!

I've had Sumitomo HTR 200 on my GSL-SE for about two weeks now and have driven over 400 miles. I like them a lot. I got them off Tirerack for only $41 each, which was the biggest reason why I chose them. I'm on a tight budget.

Anyone else with experience/ideas on the sumitomo HTR 200?
|
Try the Falken Azenis. They are 195/60/14 and have an amazing contact patch. I got them a month ago and noticed a big difference over my old firestone firehawks which were pretty good tires. You deffinetly can't drive these in snow though so I gotta put the snow tires on for sure this year.

Still looking for a replacement for my 85 GSL so I don't have any recent experience but I had Yokohama A509s on my ride (way back when) and they had amazing grip.
I've also heard from many people with Kumho Supra and they have nothing but high praise for them. Tire Rack has some very favorable reviews on the tire. Plus it's inexpensive (always a plus). -Mike |
I have brand new dunlops on my 84 gsl-se and they are great...I think they were 65.00/tire...cjf
|
I got a set of Kuhmo Ecsta's supra 712. They are a good high end tire.
280 treadwear,Traction A, Good treadpattern I like em. |
Gee...not too many for the Dunlops? Cheap (relatively speaking) and with such great ratings from TireRack...you'd think more folks would pipe up in favor of them (they are, in fact, what I plan to buy...)
|
I've used Dunlops for years on my other cars. They don't last particularly long but they sure do stick! The Dunlop SP8000's on my Audi are great. BTW, I'm running Sumitomo HTR 200's in size 205/60/13 on the rex. These tires are just fine except for the side flex..... but that's expected for such a fat tire on that rim.

These are currently ranked #1 at TireRack. I just picked up a set last night. Have not put them on yet, but they are extremely sticky. |
Cooper makes a new aggresive tread tire. I don't know anything about it, but I have liked the old Coopers I had. The new one is AA/A rated.

does anyone make a lower sidewall then a 60 for a 14" rim? besides r compounds.
|
Do you guys think the 205/60/hr14 size will eventually disappear in a good sticky tire or is there enough demand out there to keep them going - I plan on keeping my gsl-se as stock as possible for like the next 20 years?

If I were you, I'd get the Sumitomos if you don't have to drive in snow, but if you might have to, definitely get the Dunlops, 'cause one thing I know is that you don't want to get stuck in snow on summer tires.;)
|
Thanks for all the input. I just ordered some 205/60HR14 Sumitomos from tirerack just a few seconds ago. Can't stand just looking at my seven in the driveway and I am want to be ready to go to sevenstock (if I can get off work that day).
