Timing Timing Timing, It's all about the timing!!!
Okay, after exhaustive inspections, replacements and whatever, I have come to the conclusion that the reason that my engine is not starting is because of the timing, so I have a question for all of you rx-7 gurus.
How do I advance and retard the timing on the 84 12a engine. I have a timing light (more specifically my father has a timing light that i will be using.) thanks, i am sure that i will think up some more questions so check back often cheers' |
try this link. Yaw power seems to have it down.

Is this on the engine that isnt running? Cuz if you never changed the timing I doubt thats the problem.... You were driving then suddendly you werent , right? Wont have anything to do with timing, and you cant really set timing on an engine that wont at least idle, good luck..

What were the results of your compression test?
You need to focus in on one area, rule out any possibilities and then move to the next. You are bouncing around looking for easy answers. just my opinion, hanman |
Yaw power seems to have it down. If you think timing is your problem and you can't start your car, the best thing you can do is swap in a distributor from a car that is running fine. Mark the distributor and install it the same as the other car. |
Originally posted by SilverRocket Be very careful following that advice. A bunch of us have broken sparkplugs doing that. IMO it's too much advance for a street car running normal plugs if you want your engine to last. |
Happened to me back in 93' with a FRESH Rebuild, and NEW Plugs. The Tip broke off, destroying a Rotor housing, Rotor, and Apex seal. I broke 3 plugs with those Paul Yaw settings. Since then I've switched to the RB settings, platinum FC plugs and no problems since! |
here is a ballpark timing technique:
turn the main pulley until the little yellow dot is basically pointing at the top. No remove your distributor, and put it back in so that the flat piece of the cap is pointing almost straight towards the front of the car. And I assume no responsibility for what happens but this is how I got mine to run because I don't have a timing light or know a damn thing about it. |
