Timing marks are way off. Pully placement?

I was trying to check my timing and noticed that my timing marks light up several inches down, clockwise, from where the marker is. The bolt that holds the distributor in place is right in the middle, it doesnt look like it has ever been moved so I dont think the timing is that off. I'm thinking that someone took the pulley off sometime ago and put it back on wrong. Any one have any experience with this? I know there are 4 10mm screws holding on the pully, all I need to do is take the screws off and rotate the pully 90 degrees until the marks line up again right?

bump

b4 you do that, I'd fiddle with the distributor cap... just mark where it originally was and then fiddle with it--if it doesn't help, just move it back to the markings.

there are 4 ways the pulley can go on the front. but two ways the dizzy can go in. if your marks are that far off,and your sure that you are hooking the timing lite to the correct plug wire. I would vote for the turn it 90 degrees idea. just remember which way you turned it so you can put it back!

I ran into this prob when I installed the spare motor in YaYa. the thing had no dizzy and no front pulley. Experimenting and pulling junkyard motors pulley's off I found that if you set the motor at TDC the keyway for the front pulley should be at about the 10:30 position.

Good Luck:D

Yeah, I tried that. Thanks.

Thanks for the input.
I'm hooking up the timing light to L1 and also T1, correct?
As far as the dizzy, how would I know if it's in the wrong way?
I'm going to try to re-position the pully later this week, it's pretty strait foward...just 4 10mm bolts right?

Yes, it's conventional to use the "first" rotor or piston...
For the dizzy, I think there is a tally mark to help you position it...
Not sure about the pulley...

There are tally marks on the dizzy housing and the gear that you must line up to stick er in. Funny thing is there are really 2 ways to get it in, at the tally mark and 180 from the mark.

Drove me nuts till I figured this out.

I would put the dizzy in the car. Try to start it to no avail, line it up to TDC again and pull the dizzy to check it and half the damn time it wouldn’t be at the tally mark. There was no way it was jumping time and it was at 180 from the tally if it wasn’t on it. Finally figured it out.

Drove me nuts though:D

Success! The pulley was off by 90 degrees, the timing marks line up perfectly now.

I've only had the car for less than two weeks and so far I have found:
- The secondarys on the carb where disconnected
- The coil wires going to the distributor on backwards
- The timing pulley bolted 90 degrees off center

I wonder what else was put on half ass

Id almost be scared to drive it :D
