Timing - GSL-SE
 

Hey Guys,

Instead of me messing with the timing, I'm probbaly just going to pay Jose or someone to do it because apparently it's vital to the engines running right.

Now, I was reading the haynes book, it says, there are two marks (which I saw with the timing light) and that the trailing was supposed to be the second mark and the leading was supposed to be the first mark, and that they should be lined up with the pin coming off the block...

Now, looking at both, they are WAYYYY off, like the first notch is almost 2 inchs off and the second notch (when hooked up the T wire) is about an inch off.

I might have it backwards but would this affect my starting issue and smoking issue?

So,

Went to my friends house and well the timing was WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY off, no more clouds of smoke when I start it (so far) but when we fixed the timing all of a sudden my top end feels lesser.

1,000k RPMS to 6k seems great then at about 7k rpms it feels as if I hit a wall, now I know the timing is dead on, so it can't be that.

It does sound like its missing at idle, do you think that's just the way it feels normally and It just felt right to me because the low end was so crappy before?

well do you have fouled out plugs now because of all that flooding you just experienced? and do your 5th and 6th port actuators actually work?

I thought they opened at like 4,500 RPM's though.

That was my guess was fouled plugs, will using the other ones work or do I have to buy new ones?

i dunno, what do they look like? take brass wire brush and clean em up, give em a little shot of brake/carb whatever cleaner and throw em back in.

and for your actuators, push on the little lever and they should go down. if they don't then they're all carboned up.

They work, you can feel them open up at about 4,500 RPM when flooring it, could a vacum leak be causing this?

Just a couple questions about your timing:

- Was the engine warmed up?

- What RPM was the timing set at?

Below about 1000 rpm, the green connector solenoid removes vacuum advance. If you timed it above about 1000 rpm, the vac advance would be included which would make your current timing retarded. Try to set the timing at 800 rpm and see if that changes anything. Good luck.

It was set at 800 RPM per the instructions in the book and on the hood.
