timing advance alternative
Hello, I recently talked with a guy who had an interesting alternative to the vacuum timing advance on the distributor, I dont exactly know what he did, but he added a 3rd coil, locked the distributor at 15 degrees and then bypassed most of the distributor. My question is, how well does this work, what are the benefits and disadvantages of this set up, and are there any instructions on how to do this to my car? thank you for the help

Sounds like an all-or-nothing replacement for an advance mechanism that is supposed to be proportional.
I expect it would only work well for drag racing, where you're either full throttle or essentially idling. |
i don't think so, the car he had was just his weekend cruiser, small street port and a super charger, he said it was waking around 200HP, and it ran great, gave me a ride in it
|
the fact that he said it had a supercharger and then told you it had around 200hp means hes quite creditable... if he would have claimed to have 400hp, he would have been full of shit..
seems like something to try, in addition to DLIDFIS |
He locked his dizzy to keep the SC from causing detonation. I bet hes running quite a bit more
boost that normal to get it to 200HP, assuming this was a 12A. Sounds like he is using DFIS setup for his ignition, just put DFIS in and search or read the thread in my sig. |
It sounds like the guy is trying to reinvent what the 76 Cosmo had. Three sets of points and a complicated mess of switching to use the 3rd points under some conditions to work with the thermal reactor, and ballast resistors etc that all came out when I swapped in DLIDFIS. Result: 100% better drive ability and reliability.
You can tell the guy "welcome to 1976, pal" and walk away. I don't trust his claim of 200HP either. |
I believe he's making around 200 horse, at least it felt like it, he's running a S5 13B with a mild Street Port super charger and a new carburetor, not shure what kind, maybe an ida

So after doing some more research it seams like the set up he's running is a dlidfis, I could be wrong but they seems the most similar, I'm still kind of new to this so I'm not 100% sure

The car is red with vinyl graphics.

do i need to lock my dizzy at 15? or 12? i couldnt get it to start with the factory marks.. until i hook the vacuum advance back up... lol this explains that..

No he didn't build. I built that setup for him late last year. Please see this thread for the car's history. https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-gene...ed-car-778113/
Oh and it's not a locked dizzy. It has limited advance for boost. Around 12 degrees max. |
