Throwout bearing making noise: couple questions
My throwout bearing is starting to make some noise when I have the clutch engaged. It's not a harsh sound but it definitely whines. How long can I run with it like this and at what point should I definitely replace it? How hard is it to replace? Can I just put the car on jackstands, yank the tranny off and replace? TIA

Yep, that's about right. About as much work as changing the clutch. Make good of the bad, replace all the bearings, and possibly improve your clutch setup while you have access to it.

Thats right,while your thier,,,if you've never done a 7
before , it goes like this,,,,get the car in the air,,, ME,i didn't take the exhuast off,,you may want too,,, unbolt the drive shaft at the rear end, then the heat shield,(s)oh,don't forget to take the shifter knob-boot off too,,,unbolt the wires from the starter,,oh,,i would disconnect the battery first,,,then pull the starter,,oh you'll need to unbolt the clutch slave cyl. from the transmission, unbolt the rear motor mount under the transmission,un bolt the transmission and it's out,, there's a lot to go through , to get to the through-out bearing,,so make it worth while |
Much thanks for the advise! :)
Well..... it looks like I have an even more compeling reason to fix the throwout bearing. It appears that my main seal is blown ' cause I have oil seeping between the engine and the tranny. eeesh. Any further advise on replacing that little ditty? TIA |
