Are there any coolant hoses under the dash?
 

Are there any coolant hoses under the dash, (e.g. feeding the heater) or are they all within the engine bay? Question for someone who has taken the dash apart or at least enough of it to know if there are any hoses that should be replaced as Preventive Maintenance.

of course there are. Ever heard of a heater core. there are hoses that run to that. look under the hood see those two lines that dissapear into the fire wall.... thats where they are.

If you are getting coolant into the cab of the vehicle, you have probably sprung a leak in your heater core, its a commen occurance when cars get old. for the time being run the long hose from the engine to where the short hose came out of the engine, and bypass the heter core, take the core to a radiator shop, and have them recore, it if possible, if not then you need to go to Victoria British, or a large junkyard, good luck :)

Actually, there are no hoses under the dash. The two hoses that "disapear" into the dash are actually attached to fittings that protrude from the dash, through the firewall. The only coolant-containing vessel under the dash is the metal heater core, and its metal pipes. To echo Ken, if you have a leak, that's where it's coming from.

There are other sources for a replacement heater core as well. Many auto parts stores can order one, if they do not keep one in stock. VB is likely much higher, especially once you factor in their shipping cost.

no leak, just trying to understand whether there were hoses inside the car that should be replaced on a 20 year old car - now replacing several in the engine bay as part of putting new O rings in the oil cooler - and I just started thinking of whether there were hoses that maybe nearing the end of their life under the dash

I can't stand it any longer. Would've thought someone else would chime in. THERE IS SOFT HOSES INSIDE THE CAR---amazing as it sounds. Go to this thread and scroll down for a pic (not my pic but a pic of the heater core nonetheless clearly showing soft hoses to connect the copper hoses together).

Those 2 black rubber parts appear to be insulation to protect the hard line from the tie down point.

No way. I just got a new heater core and the tubes coming out of it stop at the first rubber hoses (they are stubby not long). In order to lengthen them they must have used soft hoses. Sweating (soldering) the copper pipes by using couplings bought at Home Depot would be a better way to do IMHO.

those are rubber hoses, they are not insulation. i replaced them on my car, they connect seperate pieces of the copper tubing. by the way, if you replace them, also replace the hose clamps with newer band type clamps

If it's not leaking, it's a whole lot of work for preventive maintenance. look at the hoses in the above pic, they are only about 1.5 inches long and are only used to connect the copper tubing on the heater control valve to the heater core and the main line back to the system. To replace them requires pulling the heater core box. If you're going to have a failure, it's most likely going to be the control valve (seen between the two pieces of rubber tubing). If that fails, it will also require pulling the core box to replace.

I would wait until/if you have a problem.

Thanks for the information and especially the pictures of the piping connected to the heater core under the dash - agree, it looks like too much work just for preventive maintenance - will concentrate on those hoses in the engine bay and hope that neither of the hoses under the dash ever leak - I change the coolant every year, so hopefully that will help - and capets are like new, so would not like to have them soaked in coolant!!!

would be useful to add this post to the archives to capture the pictures of the heater piping under the dash for future reference and information - how is movement to archives done?
