temp sender on 85 12a
 

:confused: :smoker: I need a little help with the location of the temp sender. I know its located on the block somewhere near the oil filler, but I don't see it.

it should be on the rear casing, below the oil filter, above the heater hose to the left . here i'll post a pic. there should be a yellow wire hooked to it.

It would'nt be in a different location because its a california car could it? I'm looking at the area in the pic, I'm not seeing it

What does the sensor do that screws into the back of the water pump housing at the front of the engine?:confused:

That controls the choke. My question is what does the sensor do at the bottom of the radiator?

Nope, same spot dude. Its really small though and usually covered in dirt.

And for the hijackers. The one on the rad is for the emissions control computer.

I did see a small opening behind the oil sender but the part I have didn't fit. Could it be missing? wouldn't water shoot out if so?:o:

"Note: A few years ago MAZDA changed the thread on the water temp sender in the rear side housing from the straight thread that they had used forever, to a metric pipe thread. All NEW rear housings have the new thread. It is essentially impossible to tell which you have with out looking at it. Most cars still use the straight thread. However, if the engine has been replaced with a FACTORY rebuilt, there is a small chance you have the pipe thread. The new sender will not read correctly in pre-80 cars"

I could have the wrong one, since there were but could it be missing from the car? The hole that is there is a little smaller than the part I have, so I'm not sure about the threads in the housing.

Well, the temp sender is broke off in the block, I tested the loose yellow wire with a test light and the gauge went up some, so it works. Anyway, anyone have any suggestions for technique, tools, etc. to get this thing out?

Drill and an easy out.

Mine broke, too. It's a pain in the ass to get it out, but like Carl said, an easy out will do it, but you're not gonna have a lot of room to work with.

i'm glad you got it figures out.

I thought the choke ran off of the main water temp sensor in the driver side's of the engine. Mine is not connected right now and I though that's why the choke wasn't working :eek:

umm i think he has the sensor behind the water pump housing.... thats called the temp. sensor as well. thats what its called on the advanced auto parts computer. is it about a half inch thick and have two wires sticking out the back?

when in doubt, spray the area with carb cleaner. might help. :D

Ok. Now here's an important question. I don't have a temp sensor in the block right now. Could I wire the temp gauge to the sensor in the back of the water pump housing? i.e. do they have the same resistance for the same temperature?

i have the same concern... i use the opening in the back of the water pump housing to run my Water Temp Guage... its an aftermarket guage and i just screwed the fitting into the hole.... the person who had this car before me had the same thing setup, but the guage crapped out.... how is this gonna affect my dellorto carb and choke? if i dont have anything plugged into it from the water pump housing???

My recommendation is to put the correct plug into the water housing and run a new adapter for your temp sender where the stock one is located.
