Teen Assault On A Gsl

CRIMES AGAINST A ROTARY

Victim: 1985 RX-7 GSL

Assailant: 16 yr old boy with a warped idea of what cool is!!!

Beneficiary: Me

Cost of purchase: $300

A couple of days ago my wife's parents were driving around on some of the back roads where we live and spotted a car just like mine(but better a GSL :) ). They told my wife about it, and her and I went to see it. I quickly told her to take me to the emergency room due to a overwhelming feeling of nausea comming over me.

I had to fight back the tears as I lifted the hood and saw this terrible 12A abuse:Wconfused

This kid must of been a big fan of the Silver Surfer or something.
Well needless to say my wife made an offer on the car and the owner even delivered it to our door. The previous owner said it just needs a fuel pump and should start right up. We will see about that.

Any suggestions on the quickest way to remove this spray on cool would be appreciated.

Jesus did he ever think to mask off the hoses and shit befroe spraying that stuff? Reminds me of my 83 GS, it had red all over the interior....
You can try using a rag soaked with laquer thinner or some other similar chemical and go at it. It's gonna take a while, some of the parts it might just be easier to get a replacement and toss teh one you have (air box, fan shroud, any other easily found and cheap parts) Good luck, and glad to see your saving it ;)

If the alternator is painted too that means.... oh for christ's sake, I hate this kid now. He just went at it willy-nilly didn't he? You might have to replace a couple more parts than just the fuel pump if any paint got into vital components and damaged them (especially if he got paint into electrical connections). I guess I must be weird or something, my idea of a good looking engine bay is having the 12A washed and scrubbed while it's being rebuilt, then going at the vacuum lines with a damp toothbrush and replacing my slightly rusty air assembly cover. I guess I'm just strange like that :P

Even got the belts nice and shinny. WHAT HAVE I GOT MYSELF INTO!

Richter12x2 08-24-07 11:13 AM

That's why you always check to make sure you've moved your silver spraypaint can before slamming the hood shut. :rlaugh:

Jeff20B 08-24-07 11:30 AM

It's only skin deep.

82transam 08-24-07 11:34 AM

Just got at it methodically and you'll get it cleaned up in no time, just a little elbow grease, and a few replacment parts here and there.

joecoolly14 08-24-07 11:36 AM

oh man i got goosebumps when i saw that... lol i wonder what that kid was thinking, or who told him it would be cool hahah

Richter12x2 08-24-07 11:37 AM

I see a gallon can of lacquer thinner in your future. :D

Rx7UnitOne 08-24-07 11:40 AM

Wow... ghetto chrome job???

Sounds like a good opportunity to remove the engine, prep the body, and then get the body repainted while you work on cleaning the engine parts.

Also, I am curious. Did the kid spray paint it from the bottom to?

sctty 08-24-07 11:45 AM

This is amazing. A friend once had a parts car that someone had done exactly the same thing to.

jay85gs 08-24-07 11:47 AM

LOL Richter, maybe I should spray paint the interior silver to keep it uniform with the engine. Autozone here I come!

Rogue_Wulff 08-24-07 11:48 AM

A good spray from a high pressure car wash will likely remove quite a bit of that nasty looking overspray.......

T_Racer 08-24-07 11:54 AM

I am dying laughing just thinking about that kid, spraying the belts while the car is running, "to assure complete coverage". Don't want to look half assed. LOL Then going inside covered in paint from the cooling fan spraying it back on him, and his mom just shaking her head.

omg thats horrible

Rx7UnitOne 08-24-07 03:18 PM

While a little funny, it does upset me a little that the kid did that. I have been looking for a GSL in the local area for a good price and yet this kid trying to trash one.

Pele 08-24-07 03:24 PM

My guess is that if he didn't mask anything off, he didn't do surface prep either.

It should flake or peel off easily.

dean7 08-24-07 03:33 PM

WHAT? You don't like custom faded paint? LOLz

Starbase89 08-24-07 03:52 PM

Believe me when I say that this kid does not represent all new drivers. I'm 17 and I would never do anything like that to a car. Just plain stupid, Especially since chrome look cant be done with spray paint.

kgray 08-24-07 05:04 PM

I've seen some pretty stupid stuff, but this may top everything.
