Tearin' into the 12a.

Digging into the rotary in preparation for the Weber carb and Racing Beat header that I'm hopefully picking up this weekend.

As you can see I've removed the carb and intake manifold.

Couple questions.

What the small rectangular opening in the center iron under the 2 intake ports?

Also, I don't think the Weber's manifold have the 2 coolent passages in it, so do I need to block them?

Can I just use an OEM replacement gasket, or can I use gasket in a tube (silicone)

Some pics.

Yes, block the passages with 20mm Freeze plugs, 2 of them. I think they will cost no more than 6$ at any auto store. If you become desperate, use 2 quarters and HIGH TEMPERATURE silicone, again, I would not recommend this.

And the hole is the EGR I believe.

Small port under the primaries, ACV port. You'll be blocking it off with the new manifold. Use a stock intake gasket from 81-85.
For the coolant passages, you can either use the o-rings and let the intake block them, or get 2 20mm freeze plugs (Dorman 555-101) and put into the housings. You will also want a new exhaust manifold/header gasket. Reusing the old one will cause massive leaks when installing a header. If the gasket that was behind the header looks good, you may be able to reuse it.

So I can just by new O-rings and that will be sufficient? Or should I take the extra step, and put in freeze plugs?

When i slap on any up grade be it the racing beat intakes systems or something custom that we do at 12:31 i just use $.25 coins or the dollar coins. $6 vs .50 cent or two dollars. They work just as good if not better and are cheaper. If you use the quarters just use silicone to seal them the same with the one dollar coins dont use the water o rings at the same time with coins

Will Canadian currency do? :)

The freeze plugs are $.50 each where I get them. They don't fall out when the intake is removed, and will almost never leak. Imagine that, removing an intake and not losing a drop of coolant........

^^ That would be convenient considering I spilled a couple liters of it on my driveway today.

Anyone know how much the 12a with the tranny will weigh?

Cause me and my bud need to lift one into a trailer, is it possible for 2 people to lift?

Jeezus 08-18-07 02:44 PM

2 people should be able to lift it :)
