Talk About Bad Judjement
 

I put a side terminal post battery in my 85' RX-7. The light housing that has that piece of metal that makes the lights operate up and down, toched the negative and burned all of my cables!!!!!!!!!! I need to fix this. Well almost all of them, till about the firewall, so much so that it will not start. I am probably going to send it to an electrical shop, but the towing cost scares me. Any thoughts guys.

Replacing wiring is not that bad, take your time, heaks=hrink and solder all connections.

Can I get a harness from another 84 or 85, and just match it up? Will the wires all be the same?

The harness is a great idea, but remember it is 25 year old wires. And yes It is heat shrink.

hells ya to the bungee cord.. I use one too but over the top not around, works wonders so far even doing donuts being retarted it still hasent fell out of place btw i have top posts not side.

As long as the battery is secuely mounted you should not have any problem with the type of posts. Most likely the headlight linkage touched the positive terminal to short it out by grounding it. Whatever type you use you would want to be sure nothing coud do this again. I would try taking the wire loom (harness) apart to see just what has fried. You may get away with replacing only a few wires. It is worth a look.

Keep in mind that some top post batterys have to have the pos post to the rear. I replaced the cables on one that was put in backwards last month and the pos post shorted on the hood hinge when the hood was closed.

i think we have all had our share of bad battery moments my stock battery tie down broke on me like three months ago and the battery moved of its mount straight into the a/c compressor but when it did it it just killed the car and wouldnt start i popped the hood and the power cabel was cut in half by the compressor always pay attention to details like these things whenever you pop the hood like when you are checking the oil and a lot of times you can prevent things like this from happening

Well I had started off with the idea that I would just splice all the wires and what not, That never really took off. (Positive and negative, Lights and all the wires shooting into the fuse box, all melted and molded together. I went out and managed to grab all the wires I thought I would need off another seven courtesy of ecology. Never went through with it as I felt I did not have the skills needed to sit and splice all the wires, and since some of the colors did not match..., I had the car towed to a shop, where the shop proceeded to put my car on the street, due to the fact that they were having a stolen car drop off epidemic at there shop. juding by the looks of the car, (Stripped, Primered Black, with no dash) The owner who was not aware of the arragement made between me and his partner(to drop the car off, and have work start that morining), had the car on the street, where the beautiful City of Paramount proceeded to have the car impounded for expired tags!!! The car caught fire the very same day it had it's exahust work done. I actualy never had a chance to drive the car with the work done. Man do I regret not doing this all myself!
