tach is going crazy

i drove my car all day today and didnt notice anything, but i got in it a little bit ago and for some reason the tach was acting insane. it bounced around and wasnt right. for example, it showed i was at 4000rpm while being in 5th gear and going 45. i know thats wrong. im not sure what it could be. i suspected a slipping clutch but the tach wasnt really acting like thats what it was and at idle it was showing around 2K. any ideas?

Check your trailing ignition, including the ignitor.

Just an F.Y.I.
The Trailing Ignitor is located on the Disti next to the Alternator.
One of my past RX's had the same problem and that's what it was.

Good way to check if the Ignitor is going bad is!!!

If you have a Timing Light hook it up to the #1 Trailing Spark Plug Wire.
If you get no signal then that for sure is the Culprit.
Another way to check if you are getting Spark, is to pull the #1 Top Spark Plug and see if it looks like it's been getting Juice i.e. Color.
Just thought I'd throw this at Ya.
Overall how is the Car running?

well my car was down for a couple of weeks around christmas cause of a problem with the ignitors. i put the ones off of my parts GSLSE on it and havent had any problems until now. i will check out the trailing as soon as i get a chance, but i dont really have a lot of free time with school and working 48 hours a week. it still runs like it normally did, but the tach is just acting crazy. i havent noticed any change in performance, but i may just not be noticing the change.

I had a faulty battery do that to me on a first, second and third gen (the strangest coincidence). It might be worthwhile to check the battery for a short, or get your local parts supplier to check it for you

Thats just a confirmation that you are driving a first gen 7. As we all know, cold weather will have similiar effects on the tach. For some reason, this week has been the only week this winter that my tach has been hanging up. Odd because we have had much colder weather and it worked fine. Not sure that I like what I am saying!

yeah it was really cold the last few nights. i just put a new battery in the car. i will take a look at everything later on today and see if i can find anything
