Swapping 1979 to power steering problems!!!
so i ran into another problem with my power steering swap on my 1979
the 1979 has a one piece steering shaft that goes from the box all the way to the steering wheel my 1985 box has a small shaft and then a connector that connects the steering column up to the box (2 piece) my question is that the 1979 column is too long so I would have to cut it down and then fit the second part of the 1985 steering column in it (doesnt look too hard. or just use the entire 1985 column and rewire the ignition switch and turn signal and wiper switch to work with my 1979 wiring. if I cut down the 1979 column ther is plenty of room for the 1985 bracket at bottom so that sounded good untill i noticed that the top part of the shaft is a larger diamater so I would have to had the top turned down to the 1979 diamater to fit in the 1979 combi switch.. who has done this swap, what did you do. let me know thanks |
Your moving the two steering mechanisms? Interesting...
Is this a maint issue or you want one function in the other?? |
no I am swapping in a 1985 GSL-SE steering box (power steering) into a non power steering 1979 model.
the problems are the 1979 column will not work with the 85 box, but if I put the 85 column in my 1979 car with the 85 box then I dont have a way of making my 1979 combi switch and ignition switch work. so I am asking what to do. |
so gen 1 came out with power steering?
|
All power steering cars came with the short shaft and rag joint (The round connector you speak of). Easiest would be to swap the entire steering shaft inside the car.

hi billy do u no where i can get a power steering box for my gen 1 thats right hand drive
|
easy fix . cut 79 column tube off past ignition switch ,far enough so you have room to weld. measure 85 tube same and cut weld on 79 end to 85 tube be sure to clock position of combo switch . and you have an 85 box in a 79.

I do not. Apparently you guys are not blessed with "junk yards" like us. I would try ausrotary.com for your right hand drive questions and part searches. -billy |
