Swapping a 13B-REW Into a '82 FB

Hello, my name is Caleb and this is my 1982 FB Rx7. For many miles it ran a n/a, carbureted s5 13b with bolt ons but now i want to make real power.

This thread will serve to show build progress, and of course for me to ask questions along my build.
The car and its progress can also be seen on YouTube at ZipTied:

Currently the car has the FD engine in it. I used the front cover and oil pan from a GSL-SE and the transmission is from a Turbo II FC, we had to modify the stock transmission mount.

Turbo is a Garrett T04E 1.00a/r. Any suggestions for turbo manifolds?

So obviously i can't run the FD crank angle sensor (cas) because the one on the FD is either hall effect or magnetic pickups mounted on the front cover with a gear. The FB front cover keeps me from doing that.

I'm trying to stay away from a distributor. I plan on running a Haltech ECU, so is there any way i could run a CAS from a FC? The sensor resistances are different though, and I'm not sure what other sensors between the FC and FD and different from each other, some input on that would be awesome! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...add4ad73c4.jpg

Thanks for the read, please give me all of the feedback.
Thanks!

I run the FC CAS myself on my REW. I know it works as I have started the car...but have yet to tune.

How custom is a REW swap? I haven't seen one done on a 1st gen before for some reason. Seems like most go for the S4/S5 Turbo swap.

Literally identical, just different rotating assembly and housings/irons. Swap the front cover on an FC or FD motor and they'll all fit the same in an FB. S4 NA, S4 TII, S5 NA, S5 TII, S6 REW, Cosmo RE, all two rotor 13b's can just have the front cover swapped to an FB front cover (12a or 13b) with a GSL-SE oil pan and they'll fit. Then it comes down to water pump fitment and such.

i've never done a TII swap so have no comparison but from what i've read, the TII swap is pretty straight forward and cheaper. for the REW, u have to go non-sequential like i did or single in order to clear the front subframe. if you want to stay sequential, then u have to cut/modify it. in terms of wiring, i chose to use PFC to make it as simple as possible and eliminate non-needed items.

Like any other 13b swap in a 1st gen, all you need is the front cover and oil pan from a GSL-SE.

Alternate transmissions require custom mounts like the example above.

You could run the FFE hall or Mag sensors depending on what ECU you are running. Obviously standalones and new wire harnesses are your best bet in swapped vehicles.

How would you go about mounting the Hall or Mag sensor? The GSL-SE front cover obviously doesn't have the mounts for it. I feel like making a custom bracket to mount the CAS would be pretty sketchy because its rotary timing plus i cant find the distance specs.. Any thoughts or knowledge?

Look up Full Function Engineering. They sell the whole kit.. trigger wheel, CAS block off, sensor, and sensor bracket. I bought their MAG sensor kit for my 13b swapped 79. I'm using a haltech sprint re, I mounted everything using a 12a front cover and it works great. Well worth the money so you don't have to use the CAS.

That is some really good information to know!

Most of us go the cheap route and end up using the stock CAS setups.

There is a section for build threads you know, might be better to move this over to that section?

Subscribing. :)

I have looked into their kit. How does it go about mounting to the 12a cover? Got any pics? Thanks for the info man I'll probably go that route.

I'll get some pics when I go home. Girlfriend is in labour right now, about to have a baby lol ! so I might not get pics right away

We all really appreciate that your way of relieving stress right now is to browse and post on rx7club but we can all wait a few days. Focus on that baby! I hope he/she comes out nice and healthy! Good luck!

Here's a FFE kit on my REW with 13b front cover, it's in my rx-4 and it worked great!
Should mount the same way on a 12a.
Its also currently forsale too. $180 shipped.

Yep looks like mine but with a 12a cover. Engine is a 13b 4 port.dont mind the wiring mess lol, still have to clean that up.
