Could someone please tell me the difference between a supercharger and a turbocharger?

Turbocharger uses the engines power to work, usually at high rpms and the supercharger has it's own power source, ie, not the engine.

A turbo uses exhaust energy (ie heat and air flow) to spin a turbine wheel. This turbine wheel is attached to a compressor wheel through a shaft. This shaft is either supported buy engine oil pressure (like and engine bearing) or a ball bearing like the ones on skate board wheels. This compressor wheel draws air in compresses it and the forces the air into the engine. It is not uncomon for turbo to spin 70,000-90,000 rpm, even more.

There are two different types of supercharges one is called a roots blower and the other a centrifugal supercharger.

A roots blower mounts on top of the eninge between the air/fuel induction (ie Carb) and the motor. This type of supercharger uses two impellers to generate a vacume resemebeling a larger displacment engine. If you were the carb on a 350 chevy (for example) you would think you were sitting on a big block. These are the ones you see sticking out of the hoods of old muscel cars.

A centrifugal supercharger is basicly the compressor side of a turbo, drive through a geared reduction off of the engines crank shaft.

Supercharges are limited in their rpm cappacity since they are directly coupled to the engine. Therefor thier abbility to produce monsterous top end power is limited
How-ever they are much more benifical in boost response, low rpm and midrange power since there is no waiting for the device to speed up to start moving air, they move a specific amount of air for a given engine rpm.

A turbo charger, being driven by exhaust flow does have to wait for the exhaust to begin flowing before it can begin to produce power. But, since it is not directly coupled to the engine it top end performance is not limited by the eninge rpm.

The Supercharger does NOT have it’s OWN power source, As it is obviously using the engine's pulley for it.


A NOS system would be its OWN Power source though.:)
since it is separate and apart from the engine, and does not cause any kind of parasitic drag.

One small clarification...
Some roots type superchargers are designed for port-injected engines, and go between the throttle body and intake manifold...

Either style SC also puts a severe load on the front housing eccentric bearing it was never designed to see...which is why sterling will eventually be running a tri-turbo set up with outboard IC's....;)
