Sunroof Knob Secrets (In Case You Didnt Know)

I managed to fix my sunroof control, yay!!! Just a word of advise, if you have the turn-style sunroof control, and you think that its hope-less to fix because when you try and put your roof up, the threded part falls back into the car? Well mine did that and I went to the junk yard and got a new one (lucky find) thinking that i would just swap them out. Well it turns out that when i swapped them out i got to looking at how the original one was made and i found out that the knob on the inside of the car is a press-fit onto the plate. So, with a little effort (quite the understatement :)) I was able to persuade the old knob back onto the plate and voila!! It works again!! :D So I just thought Id let you all know, that if you have this problem, try taking it ouyt and pressing it on again, you might get lucky.

PS - My GSL's sunroof would stay up, but not lock down, and my -SE's sunroof would lock down, but not stay up. Now both work, and I have parts left over :).

I think I follow ya on that, I have had every working of the roof assy. in a rex apart. Since i did that sunroof install on two cars. But glad you fixed it :) If you need any roof parts I got a BUNCH!

Speaking of sunroofs...I was just talking to someone today who owned an '85 GSL back when they were new...He said he bought an aftermarket sunroof that was see-through...Anyone know if one can still get those and where?

MIKE-P-28 02-19-02 01:29 AM

Id go talk to 'someone' again, cuz they are rather expensive due to being so rare.. I see them time and again on ebay go for $150-200 bucks.... I got a 79 glass roof Id sell :)

This may be ignorant, but would it fit my '85? If so, I'd be interested...

The 79's and the 85's used different mounting styles. The 79 used a big latch, the 85 used a turn knob. So, as far as I know it would not fit.

They Look like this

Glass Moonroof..

This is where I bought it from, and they sent me these Pics..

They are awesome.. I had one in 6 out of my previous Seven-Seven's.:p:

They Look like this

They are awesome. They are smoked glass so they do not
let in too much sun and heat. Although I have heard of some
that were plastic. (Never seen one though)

I have been lucky enough to have a glass top in 6 out of 7 of my last
1st Gen's..:p:

This is what my Moonroof looked like right before they sent it to me.

Not only is the mouting hardware different, but I think the sunroofs/moonroofs were slightly larger on the later models... I'm not 100% sure tho...

Anyone have any pictures of how to fix the issue of sunroof not locking down?

Not locking down how? I just took the OPs advice tore out my 80 sunroof and fixed it like he said I have it working so might be able to help. Is it just free floating when it should be tightened down and won't stay up? Feel free to message me pics and I might be able to help figure something out.

I just had my sunroof apart, must have screwed something up, now it won't go up either! I think the knob is worn out for one thing, looks like the teeth on it are worn, not much left to them! I'll try again later, vacation coming up. I should explain that it used to go up, and down, but when it was down, you could push it up with your hands.
