Hey guys, as some of you might know, I'm working on putting a system in my car, and while this maybe should go in the audio/else thread, I think your 1st gen info/comments will be better than the rest of the guys. Here is a few pix of what I'm doing (the "wood" will be covered in black carpet, and I will get new interior carpet, and the amp will be further up (that amp is busted, so I didn't drill it down, I just put it there for looks) Tell me what you guys think!

P.S. I'm using crappy materials cause well... it was free, and I love free stuff :D

Looks alright, just doesn't look like you have room to move the seat back.

this is true, I might take a few inches off of the bottom of the wood, BUT in the third picture, the seat is in the position that I drive in, and as you can see, it fits. So i'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do. It's easy to take wood off... not so easy to put it back on

You could make it look a whole lot better by glue'n carpet down over that ugly formica! Wood in a race car just isn't right! But w/the small air space in a Rex,that's gonna be loud!

One more thing! To get the best sound out of subs in any hatchback they need to fire towards the rear of the car.

forget the Carpet.... Just spray it down with some Pledge!!!

But seriously though, good job on the cutting and fitting however I think that is gonna rattle. Unless you go crazy with the silicone and put a bead between every joint.

Speaker boxes should be made of MDF.

MDF is like super fine particle board. It's some nice material.

yes, as i said before, i am going to put carpet over it, and I agree, before I bolt it down, it's going to rattle like hell. But I'm going to eventually make some brackets to hold the sucker down. and as far as firing the subs towards the rear of the car, I just didn't feel like making a box that did that for two main reasons... ONE, I'm lazy. TWO it would be much harder than a simple "boxy" box, where I would have to cut the wood at an angle in order to keep it as airtight as possible (w/out caulking the crap out of it). Anyway, the hatch of the car is my summer project, I'll keep you guys updated (suggestions/comments are always appreciated!)

Yea i don't know how long that shitty laminated particle board is going to hold up with the abuse of subs. If i was you, i think i would try to mimic the curvatures of the bins, the way you have it set up looks like it's just too big. BUT, i don't know how much Cu. Ft. those subs needs.

oh, yeah, and i would definitely use MDF if I had it. One other side note is that in the pictures, the wood that is in the back (the little pieces) are just sitting there, I haven't screwed them in, i just wedged them in to get an idea of what the final product will look like. so if it looks a tad funky, that's why

cu. ft. per sub = .7, current set up, should be at about 7.09 :D

and as far as the partical board... this is sort of a "step one" type of deal where I'm just learning how to measure, cut, etc etc etc. The last time I made something was in middle school, and i'm a sophomore in college now... so it's been quite some time

WHen I put a sub box together, I glue all the joints together with liquid nails. I then use drywall screws every 4-5 inches to hold it all together. I have never had a box rattle or leak. Just a little extra insurance.

But good job there. Very nice set up. I have a 12" pioneer for my car. Making a custom box for it as soon as I can. It will be right behind the seats, but will fire toward the back. It also will be designed so it is only 10" tall. Should be sweet.

BTW, I don't know how 0.7 cu ft is going to work. I find that whenever possible, use a larger box. Your speakers will ALWAYS sound better if they are in the most optimal box size, which IS NOT the manufacturers recommended size. The recommended size is the smallest usable size. For your sony's, I bet the optimal size is more like 1.7-2.0 cu ft.

First off, i like the way that looks very much, good work. I plan on making that piece that has room for the hump in the middle before the project is done, but first I need to work on actually putting together the boxes under the panel inside where the bins normally go

has anyone made a bandpass type enclosure for that location?

Speaking of rattling, I have a 15in JL in mine and let me tell you...everything that has a screw in it is going to need tightening every week! Not counting other things you rattle loose that you'd wish you didn't!

Bandpass=shit, they're too boomy and muddy. They are strictly an SPL application, unless you like your ghetto gangsta rap that is.

weird design it looks like it will interupt with driving since u dont have much room to move the seat back and its too eye catching. Look like poeple will wanna take ur system try hiding it.

It is kinda a unique design, but I thought it looked cool. When I re-carpet everything, i'm gonna make a tarp-type piece that will pull straight over everything, so it will just look like I have crap in the hatch, nothing of value (if you can call sony products valueable)

Bandpass=Da Bomb. I have heard many types of boxes with different speakers, and nothing sounds like a bandpass. They are so good at making low frequencies, and can be soooo tight if built right that they outperform many types of boxes. The problem with bandpass is that the overall box has to be huge to get the right affect. Not really suited for a smaller car, such as a 7.

I used to have a giant bandpass box ( 1cuft sealed side and 2 cuft vented side per speaker ) holding 2 Orion 12's. My friend had a 79 240. Got bored one day and installed it. We had to bend the hatch lip out of the way to make it fit. Hooked up a 1000 watt Sony amp. Shook the rearview mirror off before seaperating the speakers cone vrom thevoice coil. They were paper speakers. Loudest system I have ener heard.

pointing the subs towards the rear would be better but with two subs i don't think it will make a huge difference. there has been a lot of controversy over this type of speaker mounting angle. let us know how it sounds when you are done.
