Streetport

I'm going to need a rebuilt engine in about 4 months when i start driving and I have a totally stock(except engine torque brace installed from last owner) rx7 and i want more power than just a stock 12a. I want to get a streetported 12a, but i got a problem. I have emissions. Stupid emissions. So, my question is can i pass smog with a streetported 12a and what would i have to do to get it to run if i got it. Would it run with stock stuff or would i have to get some more parts. Thanks in advance for any advice. God bless

the simple, abbreviated version:

no.
yes, it would "run" but if you'e going to streetport, then why wouldn't you address the engine ancillaries.

check the archives or search for a thread by Vipernicus42 on the ultimate 12A.

Depends on how you tune and how big your ports are made.
My S5 TII engine passes CA smog no problem with an average streetport. But thats with EFI calling the shots to keep things clean. The stock TII engines have about 75% of an average streetport, from the factory. My setup basically consisted of a cleanup job on the ports.

You can coax more power with porting and still retain smogability, even with the stock 12A carb and emissions gear, but itll require a bit of mixture tuning and a restrained amount of porting.....best to consult an experienced engine builder(preferably in CA),before proceeding.

cool. thanks. I don't know what i'm going to do yet, but i got a few months and I'm definately going to have a professional to rebuild it and install it.
