I'm part of a new car club in washington indiana, and we recently took in an 83 Mazda Rx7 and well we striped it down and gonna turn it into a drag/show car. Any suggestions greatly appriciated. also anyone know what bolt sizes the 5 speed transmission use? the original owner treated this 7 like crap, and screwed a lot of things up like removing tranny bolts, and several other things. Well thanks for the help.

Just a word of warning on the tranny bolts. All of them are the same size, but the one behind the starter is a different thread pitch. And I believe that is the only bolt in the entire car that is that size and pitch. The other bolts will thread in, but will strip the threads in the iron. The one bolt that has a slot for a screw driver in the end goes in the top passenger side of the engine/tranny and holds the rear engine lift hook. It screws in front to back, reverse of the others.

Ok another question, Can you install a turbo on a carburated 13b?

Blowthru/drawthru carbed setups predate FI set ups by 40-50 years. Some of the earliest ones were supercharged airplane engines.

The Seven Started, It's been sittin since August 2001, and it fired up with no problem. Now it's just a matter of pulling the motor, and getting performance parts, we striped it down and have to replace the floorpans, and basically replace the chasis. And then it's on to building the drag/show car. Any Advice Welcome :dragster:

hit the faqs/archive section...most all information you could ask for will be found there... if it's not there then hit the search button... it's not that we're not all up for the task of answering minute little questions, but it has been covered before in most cases.. and by eliminating repeat posts we can save more space on the server... as for building your car, there is a wealth of potential power in a rotary engine, but don't expect to find many "bolt-on" performance parts. Most modifiactions are going to require both a bit of engineering and some sort of tunning knowledge. Keep in mind that while a rotary engine if properly maintained will far outlast it's piston counterpart, they are not very forgiving when it comes to poor tunning and can become quite expensive to rebuild. Knowledge is key.

As for the show car part of your project, realize that many first gen enthusiasts have owned these cars since new or can remember when they were new, and can be purists in a sense. They often times consider any sort of "ricey" modification to be almost blasphemous to be performed on any first gen rx7. My car is a great case in point as right now she is wearing a Mariah Mode 4 widebody kit, while built for the car and designed in the 80's I have received mixed oppinions about "changing the body lines" of my 81. The oppinions have ranged from love to hate. Ultimatley you should build the car for you, but just be prepared to hear others voice there opinions, because this is definately not a shy bunch.

My advice is if you have to replace the floor pans get rid of it. There are lots of rust free first gens to be had for $500 or less. By the time you get those floor pans out and replaced you'll have at least that much in the current car for parts and labor...

Just something to consider...

Thanks for the advice, We are planning on keeping it "stock looking" we took off the trim and are gonna shave the side parking lights. Fender Flares on the rear for wider wheels. Most of the parts are gonna be for performance but we want it to look nice too, We know it'll be hard it's an 83 Rx7 Limited Edition. But yes Thank You for the advice, and I've been reading the other threads.

Ahh! 83 LE changes the story a little bit. :D Now I understand why you are fixing the rust. Did the car come with the mesh wheels by any chance? If so what do you plan on doing with them? If the price is right I might be interested in buying them off of you, since you're going with aftermarket wheels anyway. Let me know.

Japan had a turbo'ed carb'ed 12A engine available whereas North America got the 13B fuel injected normally aspirated engine in it's high-end version.

Found out when we pulled the engine it's a 12a not a 13b.
