strange rear wiper problem
 

hey guys, i've had a 82 gsl for about two months with rear wiper and a switch next to the cruise control. well the rear wiper has never worked. when i press and hold the button down (for the squiter), the front wipers go on. so I check for power to the wires. There is power to it. So I adjusted the contacts on the lift support. and made sure it was making contact. when i turned the key, the front wipers turned on and i couldn't turn it off until i disconnected the rear wipers. what's going on? anyone have had this problem?

Sounds to me like there are some wires not hooked up correctly/switched around. I dont have rear wipers so good luck. Hopefully someone can help you out.

Hmm I have a rear wiper so I may be able to help. I had some trouble with those darned contacts on the gas support cylinder, mine broke so i cable tied it and has been fine ever since.

My haynes manual has no reference to a rear wiper at all, so all I can suggest is to trace the wires, or run new ones...

My rear wiper switch is in the centre console just next to the handbrake/electric window switches.

Sounds like a switch burned out and someone switched the wires to the switch for the rear wiper. To much switching........

hey guys, so it sounds like i need to track down some wires. it's just weird because the front wiper switch seem to work find, so somehow the wires got crossed...

well, I just fixed it, turned out just to be a blown fuse, though I have no idea why the front wipers would go on when the fuse for the rear wiper is blown, it's just weird...

The only good thing about having a rear wiper is well, nothing,lol. I have never seen one tht will work for any period of time. personally i think it throws the body lines off, what do my fellow rxers think about the subject? rx7doctor

I just realized a good usage for the rear washer motor. Use it to inject a mist of water into the intake chamber under hard acceleration or run it into the intercooler
on turbo versions to cool down the intercooler. then you can use the rear wiper portion of the car to clean your windows like a squeege,lol. rx7doctor

I bet that is real useful. take it and mount it on the inside of the driverside window and use it for a quick defogger, lol. rx7doctor or better yet mount it on the outside of your driver window or cut it down and use it for wipers for the headlamps. rx7doctor

I'd have to agree that the rear wiper is completely useless. I have never really used it other than a mechanism to clean the rear window in the case that it was dirty ... when it rains water doesnt really collect on the hatch or obstruct vision..

Here in Shreveport I beg to differ, the time I really need it is when it's been raining all night, it's dark in the morning and I need to back up to get down my driveway and when both your mirrors are fogged over it's kind of hard so you do it the "Eric Way" and move it by hand and put it back in it's spot and try and back up with your head out the window...
