stock stereo wiring problems
 

I got my 85 GSL without a stereo. So I managed to find a stock unit with the tuner/tape/EQ. I used the factory plugs and it did not work. Fuses are fine. Seemed like there was no power coming from the wire that is supposed to be the 12v switched. The one beside the illumination.

I got some wiring diagrams from this forum and managed to get the stereo working. I did this by splicing into the ignition switched power wire (blue with white stripe) that goes to the tape deck portion, and running it to the 3-wire main connector on the tuner. It was the only wire that seemed to have 12v switched power. So now I have 12v switched power going to the tape deck and the tuner. I think this is wrong.

Well the stereo is intermittant. It will always light up, but sometimes there is no sound. Also sometimes when I turn on the headlights my clock display will dissapear. It makes a loud thump through the speakers when it is turned on, and my oil pressure guage is reading 0 sometimes. The power antenna motor is not functioning properly either.

This really sucks.

make sure you have a good ground (make your own) and get a new aftermarket stereo run new wires to the speakers and replace the speakers, its not too big of an investment but you'll definitly be happy with it.

I want to keep the stock stereo for now. The speakers are brand new.

Are the screws holding the stereo in place a sufficient ground?

The screws used to mount the stereo are most likely NOT a sufficient ground. I'm fairly certain that the stereo is not designed to ground through it's frame, as I have never seen a stereo desgined this way. There should be a ground wire in the wiring harness. Find it, and if need be splice into it and ground straight to the best thing you can find. The metal framework of the dash that the stereo is mounted to usually will suffice.

there is no good ground in the harnesses you need to find an area, i used it by the stick shifter put a self tapping screw in and take that back as your ground..... do you have a multimeter?

I have a multimeter, so I can confirm a good ground. I just have to find the correct wire in the harness.

The schematics in the hanes manual should tell me.

I will take a stab at it later today.
