Stereo unit ?

Im sure many of you have noticed how the face of our stereo units turn kinda tan over the years. It seems to have a protective covering on it that turns as it ages. Mine has a few scratched places on it where this covering has came off and it appears to be a brighter silver underneath.

My question is...Have any of you tried anything to get this covering off and make it look new again?

Thanks

i've never tried removing that protective film. i assume that it was put there as a "clear coat" for the radio's finish. i'mnot sure what would happen if you pulled it off. keep us posted if you do.

Thanks Dave, I will. Anybody ever tried to clean up the face of their unit???/

I have not tried this, however, I am going today to pick up an 83 to restart my RX7 collection. I also own a graphics business. Once I get it home I will see what is involved with removing that cover AND quite possibly may be able to cut us a new clear shiny protective cover for the radio on my plotter.

LMK if anyone is able to do this before I get a chance, but I know if it can be done, someone here can figure it out.

I learned the hard way about this "film" you speak of. One 7 I bought, the radio worked fine, but had that brownish crap all over it, so I took a spare radio I had that didn't work so well, but was nice and shiny...So I took everything apart and swapped just the fronts on all three pcs(radio,eq,tape). Then I realized the brown crap scraped right off with my fingernail. So the next time I ran into this issue, I used a very stiff nylon bristled brush and a cuticle stick(orange stick) that was very pointy on one end and a wedge shaped on the other. I lightly scraped all the crap off, then cleaned with IPA( isopropyl alcohol). It's been a few years, and still looks great! Hope this helps.l

Cool, so a brush, cuticle stick to scrape everything off, then alcohol to clean up and Im good??? I was wondering about the new finish fading, but you said your has been good for a few years now....I think Im going to give it a try this weekend.

Hope the wife has one of these cuticle sticks.

Thanks, R

Yes, they are clear-coated.

I actually started at one time to remove the CC with a solvent cleaner. Got part way thru and stopped for some other project. It looks good underneath but mine was a very slow and tedious project....
