Steering box lock ring removal

i have a 1982 12a GS with the manual steering box and it has a lot of slop in it (for only having 85,000miles!). trying to follow proper procedure on seeing if it can be adjusted. However I can’t get the lock ring that holds the steering column adjuster loose. Any recommendations on how to break it free?

I have already bought a 40mm socket and have removed the top lock ring. I thought that was going to be the hard part..

i have read the instructions from other threads but any advice would be appreciated on how to get the slop out of this box or any adjustment advice! It is annoying to drive it like this.

Did you read this one? It looks like you need to position a chisel at the proper angle and whack it loose digging into the edge of the lock ring....

I've not done this, but Tim Wilbers' thread ^^^^ seems really comprehensive.

That didn't work for me, finally had to give up till I can weld up a wrench since 1 doesn't seem to exist. Just don't mangle it, you can get a lot of adjustment out of the top box screw.
