Starter problems...

I need to new starter. Where is a good place to buy one? I saw Mazdatrix has them for $260. Are there cheaper places?

Also, how hard are they to install. Is it pretty much a bolt on?

Easy as pie to install. Just two bolts. Just put the car up on ramps or use jack stands. The starter is on the driver's side just behind the oil pan. I got mine from Crappy Tire (Cdn hardware store chain full of morons). But I got a good price on a remanufactured one with a core trade in. Somewhere in the neighbourhood of $70 - $80 Cdn.

Thanx man!

I appreciate it. Now I just have to call around. Sweet! :bigthumb:

This has been happening off and on since the end of last summer. Basically the starter doesn't move when I turn the key. I found out that if I clink it lightly with a wrench it will start most of the time. I also park on a slight incline whenever I can so I can catch it in gear if I need to. Only had to do that twice so far. Anyway, I guess its time to bite the bullet.

Since you have to take yours out anyway, why not take it to a local rebuilder? $60+ (they'll give you an estimate first) and no pricey shipping (starters are heavy!). Plus it will be warranteed locally if there is a problem.
Hint: really look CLOSELY (like: draw yourself a picture or get a digital snap) of how all the wires attach!! and how they are routed! Its not really complex to begin with, but, for example, the big main batttery positive lead attaches (at least on my 80) at a very specific angle to fit properly - something I failed to note on the install - so I was back down there again... :(
