stalls at 6K

A friend of mine has a 1st generation rx7. For one reason or another if you get the car to 6k fairly quickly, the car either stalls or completly looses throttle control. My guess is a vacuum leak, and that's how i'm going to treat it unless one of you tells me otherwise. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas.

Check the fuel filter

What gear is the car in when this happens? Mine would start to do this in 3rd and fuel filter ended up being the culpret. change it, it's easy. :)

Check this hose. Sounds just like what mine did http://mazdatrix.com/c-5.htm anti-afterburn valve hose

I'm saying fuel filter or fuel pump.

To describe what mine did . Sure it climb right up there in the rpms but when it started pulling in 3rd it start to spit and sputter and almost die aroung 6000 if I didn't pull it over and try to keep it going by pumping the gas it would die. Had to shut it off and it usually started right back up no problem. Mine was the hose. Been fine ever since. Also easier to check than fuel pump or filter.

that is definatly the fuel filter, the float bowls in the carb have enough gas in them to supply the engine with poewr in 1st and 2nd, but by 3rd that's spent and since the fuel filter is clogged the engine starves for fuel untill you let your foot off the gas and it can catch up again. the fuel filter is $5 at NAPA, and takes 5-10min to change. Do it, that's what was wrong with mine. good luck :)

Oh and if the filter doesn't do it (99% chance that it will) then your pump is fucked. I'm sure it's the filter though. :)

i would go to advance or autozone and get a see-through fuel filter. that way it only takes a second to glance under the car to see if its dirty.

got a similiar problem,,,sputters at 5k-6k rpm...going to go with the advise noted...my fuel pump is loud too..is that a sign the pump is going??anyone know??...thanks...by the way, my car is the gsl-se.

I agree with everyone above ...some color commentary-

I have had 3 - 1st gens which at one time or another suffered from these problems.

I actually bought one of them off a guy (wouldn't start) for $200 because I could NOT hear that "tick, tick, tick" of the fuel pump. Three hours later, I was getting it smogged. :) I got a replacement pump from Car Parts Plus (North Carolina) and made a bracket - these aftermarket pumps aren't a perfect fit, but they are cheap.

If its a 12A and you want OEM, go to www.thepartsbin.com search for E3000-21655 its about $53 for the pump.

I have seen the rubber grommets wear out and the pump (which is dangling) bangs against the metal posts making a racket. If the grommets are history, I'd bet the fuel filter is also.

Fuil filter is the most likely cause of the problem. Old car, old fuil lines - clog up easily! I changed mine last year and had to do it again this year (and I only have 60K on mine). A lot of krud can build up in those lines over the years!!
