Squealing noise coming from intake?

I just bought this 81 GSL (400$) but he started it up and their was squealing noise which he thought was a vaccum leak. But i got home and had it running and found out when you take the air filter cover off it is definaltly from in there.Any ideas what it is or how to fix it?

Sounds like there's something trapped in an airway. Keep taking shit apart until you find it is my best advice.

Maybe the carb valve thats stuck if it has a carb

are you sure it's not just "wind" noise from air being sucked in? nothing moves constantly in the carb? does it only squeal ones, or is it constant?

it is pretty constant and yeah it has a carb

racintang 09-29-05 07:33 PM

how loud is the squeal

racintang 09-29-05 07:35 PM

I bet that if you take the carb off and do some heavy cleaning on it and rebuild it with the rebuild kit that it probaly go away. could be something as small as a 1/8 inch metal shard or a piece of gasket hanging over causing some turbelence. Thats about all I can think of.

Is it a squealing noise or more of a hollow honking sound?

1985GSL 09-29-05 09:21 PM

umm I think it is like a squealing and when it is idleing it is pretty loud from outside the car

remove the airfilter assembly completely and plug any vacuum lines. Once you get it down to the bare carb (no filter or box) start her up and see if it is still doing it.

Start her up, take air filter cover off move filter. Ok you've got 3 holes, the small hole right next to the bimetal control value (the little metal part) theres a hole. Plug it!!! the sound should stop. if it does the next step is to change the Vacuum Control solenoid. That should stop it. Also make sure and check and see it your intake is turning red and your cat. Run her for about 20 min and look under the car to see if she's turning red and Imean red glowing red. Mine was so red you could cook on it and if thats happening hollow out your cats.

I'm having a simular problem with mine, but it doesn't happen until i'm reving it up. I think that it might be a fanbelt. but have not tried the soap trick yet to see if it stops. It happens around 5k rpms. Would it be possible that i could have colse to the same issue?
