Sputtering-Still!!!
Well, this is the third time I've had to come here with this problem. I cannot figure it out and its driving me crazy. I've never had a problem with this car and its really dissapointing me. Here it is in the best way I can describe it.
The car sputters when the secondaries are open. It almost sounds like its detonating. This started happening shortly after hooking up mechanical secondaries, but it happens with the vacuum secondaries now as well. But the confusing part is that it usually will only sputter when the secondaries are open after 4500 or so. Under that and it hauls, just a bit of sputtering. I've done everything I can think of. Plugs are good Spark is good Wires are OK, new ones next week Timing is good Timing appears to be advancing as it should The wires are all hitched up correct No vacuum leaks (that I can tell) Runs quite good (idles better than it ever has) Erractic Tachometer (goes crazy, makes strange movements) Fuel Filter is brand new Float Levels are good Fuel pump is presumably good Carb is clean, jets not clogged Upon checking my timing though, I only got a good reading on one rotor. The other rotors timing didn't show up by any mark. I dunno if this is normal or not. Like I said, I'm really at a loss here. My car has been running so good and for some reason its taken this turn for the worse. I know I'm getting upset and desperate now but I REALLY don't know what to do anymore. Thanks to all that help! |
often times with an erratic tach, the trailing ignition is failing..or your tach is bad or you have faulty wiring or bad grounds..have you rebuilt your carb or just cleaned the jets? it is essential to do a full rebuild. replace that accelerator pump and clean the air bleeds and fuel bowles. replace the needle and seat. test the ignitors and coils. make sure your mixture is set properly.

Check vacuum advances.

Thanks guys. I checked the vacuum advancements, they seemed to work good, like I said my timing appears to be advancing as it should.
I did not do a full rebuild on my carb. I'll go out and get a rebuild kit then. I checked the resistance across the coils and it appears good. I'm going to do 2GCDFIS soon so if its the coils I'll get that fixed. I've swapped coils around and that didn't do anything either, so the coils should be good. How exactly do you check the mixture? I know how to change the idle mixture but not the entire mixture at all. What should the vacuum be at? When I check the vacuum with a gauge I get about 12-14 and its really shakey. Is this right? Thanks! |
Both timing marks should show up.
If your trailing doesn’t I would pursue that fault. Look at the cap and rotor - again Does your timing light flash on all four plugs Swap igniter Coils Swap/jumper wires etc |
The timing light flashes on all plugs, but on the number two rotor you couldn't see the timing marks at all on the leading or trailing. The number one rotor's timing was fine.

Bump. I noticed I'm also having a problem as I turn corners. The car bogs whenever I make a hard right turn. My tank is full, of course. Sounds like a carb issue there eh?
|
or maybe faulty fuel pump wiring causing the connection to be lost around a corner..just throwing that out there..
