Spiders!!!!

I just wanted to share a terror. I picked up the car that I am beginning to restore, and it is infested with wolf spiders!! This is gonna be more work than I thought. This is what I get for getting a free car.

64mgb 08-25-05 08:02 PM

Yea, mine had several wasp nests up in the undercarriage...yuk!

Rich

Rusty Shackleford 08-25-05 08:22 PM

my car after sitting in my driveway for a few months not being driven had tons of wasps inside the car..but all doors and windows were closed....you could open the door and look at the hatch carpet and see like 30 somthing dead wasps adding to it everyday

RRTEC 08-25-05 09:45 PM

Place a bug bomb in the car.. that will get them... Funny story- Today i rode my 05 CBR to work (35 miles one way) first time in about 2 weeks.. Parked the bike looked down and WHAM!!! right there was a little green tree frog hanging on for dear life! Anyways, I always have to fight critters when I work on my cars, that is what i get for living in the south.

Terrh 08-25-05 09:51 PM

spiders don't bug me at all... neither do frogs!

but hornets/bees/wasps.. augh!

you know, I think if I looked at an FD that they wanted $500 for and it was mint, but was infested with wasps... I wouldn't buy it.. I hate the bastards!

(actually, I would buy it, but not go near it till someone ELSE killed them ALL and removed the dead ones... )

bigb3433 08-25-05 10:08 PM

lolol yeah im the same way with any spiders and flying wasps etc. im thinking bout buying an old alfa i found in a barn but im calling an exterminator first for sure if i do.....could also have rats and bats in it. its a fucking zoo in there

1985_RX-7 08-25-05 10:14 PM

Lol at yall, im too in the south and been seing nothing but wasps and these big ass light brown/ brown spiders, everywhere when i go to Giddings to work on my car but here in Round Rock there is just a few wasps and tone of Mosquito's.

Rusty Shackleford 08-25-05 10:17 PM

are wolf spiders posioness??

the worst is trying to work on my car and having mosquitoes all over you....jeez charleston is bad depending on the season i literally cant go out to work on my car unless i use like a whole bottle of that off spray and even then they get you..!!!!!

Mschafe 08-25-05 10:23 PM

just be thankful they don't have the spiders over here that they have in Australia. I was looking at an S2 when I was over there that had been sitting for a year, and above the visor there was a BIG ASS Huntsman (about the size of my hand if not bigger), that fell into my lap. Scared the absolute shit out of me, even though they aren't poisonous.

gerbraldy 08-25-05 10:53 PM

My friends 94 mustang gt has been sitting for about 3years due to a broke auto tranny (and him being a total lazy bastard) and it is INFESTED with black widows. If you sit in that car for 2minutes, you will have to go to the hospital. I've had a *white black widow land on my lap when I was driving my car, pulled down the visor and the bastard landed RIGHT next to a little hole in my pants (by the crotch of course) I squised that thing so dam fast it didn't even have time to see it coming.

fishbulb95 08-26-05 03:22 AM

OWNED!!!!!!! .. .. j/k.. yea i know your pain when i got my wagon, it had moss growing on it.. not as bad as spiders, but a damn bitch to clean it up.

Mechy 08-26-05 07:31 AM

We have huntsman here too, they arent poisonous and neither are the wolf spiders, but damn the size of my hand, I laid off 2 bug bombs so far and gonna do another one before I tear out the interior. My fiancee just IMed me and apparently one of them made it in the house, she said the spider spray I bought just got it wet and didnt phase the nasty bastard. Oh well, time to call the Orkin man

Pen_Two 08-26-05 07:37 AM

I thought I was the only one afraid of shit living off of my 7. I can't win with these damn hornets though. The last two years they've been inside the rear bumper. So I finally go ambitious with a nice cold morning. I'd flat-foot my bumper and watch them fall out. I only expected maybe 4 or 5 hornets. A whole god damn hive was in it. I swear the nest was the size of my foot (size 10 mens). If it were an Olympic race...I'd have won by a landslide. I got them back though, I bought 2 cans of this spray that shoots about 10 feet. The back half of the car, and the ground around it were nothing but a white foam of insect death. I felt like I had won a victory for mankind... :rlaugh:

Pele 08-26-05 09:19 AM

I'm glad my interior is coming out.

cosmicbang 08-26-05 10:14 AM

Large easily visible insects are better than small ticks and spiders, or even worse the diseases they carry. I bought an antique car formerly home to a large colony of mice and filled with droppings. To clean it out I wore military gas mask and chem warfare gear sprayed with DEET. You can get hantavirus from breathing the dust of rodent shit, and should not use a broom or vacuum. The fleas can carry plague, etc.

RRTEC 08-26-05 10:16 AM

I get chiggers when I work on my cars...ouch

anthrax 08-26-05 10:21 AM

I had mice in my first FB they made it there home, bathrood and cemitery all at the same time.

It took alot of work to get the smell out, I drove that car for two years, and then bought one that had been garage stored, and babied real good so it is clean and I no longer smell like mouse...

BTW break claner makes great wasp killer

bigb3433 08-26-05 02:56 PM

ahhhh............the joy of working on old cars. gotta love it as much as u hate it. guys with souped up evo's and sti's think their the shit bet they never had to suit up in war gear to install that boost controller lol..

Eriks85Rx7 08-26-05 03:04 PM

once my cat was missing, he got outside somehow and went underneath my dads truck. My dad drove all the way to dunkin donuts ( 20 mile drive) with the cat underneatht the truck! As soon as he parked the cat jumped out from underneath lol.

mckinneyml 08-26-05 05:58 PM

I've heard that you can keep rodents away from your car by placing shavings of Zest bar soap in the car. They apparently don't like the smell.

kenn_chan 08-26-05 06:50 PM

my my my!

Maybe so, but I have also heard that if you drive the car occasionally they don't tend to like that either :bigthumb:

what are you guys doing? trying to start mini museums with your cars? put some miles on the poor things and the critters won't infest them :p:

for the purposes of this thread, the line titled "lions and tigers and bears Oh My!" has been changed to "spiders and wasps and mice Oh my!" :rlaugh: :rlaugh:

How about mothballs?

imazro_77 08-26-05 10:06 PM

My 81 sat in my garage for about 4 month's. I went down to work on it and notice little brown bumps all over the hood that looked like they were moving. It turn's out there were about 300 baby spiders that had hatched somewhere. They wer all in the engine bay all over the front of my car. only thing I had handy was windex, Killed em all nice and clean, the car was shinny too.

rotaryredneck 08-26-05 10:30 PM

We have alot of Black Widows here, thats bad because they are very poisonous. Living in the south and have a junkyard go figure. Atleast you dont have to worry about a rattler laying in the seat when you open the car door...

CHEF_EG_1 08-27-05 02:42 PM

I went out to play "vroom vroom" noises in my 85 this morning... ohhh, what a treat I found... as there's a banana spider... probably almost 8", tip to tip, sitting on the door handle.

I went back inside the house.

85rotarypower 08-27-05 03:47 PM

Just reading this thread gives me goosebumps. I HATE spiders and bees and wasps and that kinda thing. Any insect that can in any way hurt me. I hate em. I can deal with snakes and mice just fine, but if spiders and wasps are invading my car, I'm outa there. I've been lucky so far this summer. Nothing has invaded my car and it hasn't moved or really even been touched all summer.

bliffle 08-27-05 05:14 PM

Nothing worse than blasting down the freeway at 75 and having a black widow start spinning a web down from the rearview mirror.

You mean out in the middle to no where!!!!!!!!

RustyRotary 08-27-05 11:00 PM

Insects are the reason that I overheated my engine to the point of no return.

I had just installed my carb and started up the car with it about 1/2 way out the garage when I went around the back to check how much it was smoking. Somewhere in the process a yellow jacket landed on my neck and stung me. I looked up and saw a nest the size of a softball in the corner of the garage door about 2 feet from my head  I was pretty angry about being stung and went and got a can of Raid and sprayed the hell out of the thing, made sure every last yellow jacket was dead. By the time I got back into my car the temp needle was maxed =\

Damned yellow jackets.

Mechy 08-30-05 10:40 AM

Well i threw in 3 fog bombs and thought I had them all dead, So i ripped out the interior went in for a smoke, came out again and there was a spider guarding the car. It knew what I was gonna do. I zigged to the left it followed, zagged to the right, it followed, Tok one step forward and it did the same. When I realised how ridiculous a mexican stand off with a spider was. I squished the bastard. Thought it was the last one til I took the door panel off. Found one there carrying eggs around like a backpack of infestation. So I flooded the door with water and hopefully got her. Found another one under my carport, damn escapee now lives in my barbeque, Im gonna roast it this weekend.

For those of you who dont know what a wolf spider is here is a pic

Mechy 08-31-05 11:16 AM

Anyone ever hear of spiders living in the dash? I'm gonna take it off this weekend and need to know if i should be on guard, also I noticed webs around the ac vents, anyone know a good way to get em out of there?

klasa666 08-31-05 12:53 PM

I have to tell you guys.. this has been extremely entertaining for me to read! All the big bad men are afraid of the no see-ums and what-nots! LOL! Now I don't feel bad that I'm terrified of frogs... cuz they probably won't be poppin out of my engine or sitting on my door handle on me! Let alone fallin from my visor..... but i'll give ya this - those wolf spiders look pretty ugly.

Kyrle 08-31-05 06:30 PM

I have a bunch of mud dobbers around my transmission area. Going to throw a couple of bombs under it this weekend so i can do a cluth job.

It's not so much scared of them. It's that I don't like to sit on them or lean back on them and squish them against myself...

Living things are just generally unpleasent.

I think everyone who reads that is going to be hurt.

Mechy 09-01-05 05:50 AM

well im afraid of em, who the hell needs 8 legs anyways, everything else i can deal with, snakes, gators, bees, hornets, bears, tigers, lions, whatever, i just cant deal with spiders. And its normal to hate spiders, frogs on the other hand......

R U implying I'm not Normal?!?!?!?!?!? LOL And just an FYI... the fear of frogs is called batrachaphobia. I was a little disturbed by the fear myself so I did some research on it! Figure some nasty little boy threw one at me when I was little or something...

pratch 09-01-05 02:21 PM

It's okay - Rx7Carl (yup, the Mod here), got a parts car from me. Once he started stripping it down, he said he found Black Widows!

Yeah, I can't help but feel I got the best end of that exchange ;)
