speed-o-meter

I have a guy who's speedometer is acting up in cold weather. Until it warms, up it has a "click" and reads faster than it should. The odometer is reading correctly. I assume it is the "clutch" that is not slipping smoothly and has a "grab" to it that causes the needle to spike high. Nothing looks like it can (or should) be taken apart in the "clutch" mechanism. Is there any other action that can be taken other than swapping out the speed/odo assembly??

Any speedshop (instruments and tachs) should be able to rebuild it. I had the 85mph speedo in my 80LS rebuilt and regeared for a 160mph top speed and they rebuilt everything to new condition. Total fee was about $100, including the new gauge face.

Next question longduck. Pic of the gauge face? :D

I'll get the digital camera out tonight and take a shot at it. The original speedo was acting up and there was a company in the back of Rotary Rocket magazine that said they offered a 160mph and a 200mph speedo face with regearing.

When I called, the tech recommended that I go with the 160, since the 200mph gauge face would ready 55 (highway speed) at about 1/4 of the gauge which really didn't look right and the increments were so small that it would be difficult to judge speed. On his advice I went with the lower 160 face.

I'm reluctant to pull it out of the car, however, since the 80LS is gradually being stripped down - blown engine back in 1997. I'm afraid that pulling it out will cause a problem if I find a buyer who wants to restore it, or I'll have to donate it to a local charity.

I figured a shop could do it but I was hoping for a self fix of some sort. If that (shop) is the only option, I'll just sell him one of mine.:)
