Spark Plug wires stupid question
hello everyone,
Im quite new to this forum and im young (16) just learning about my 1985 GSL RX7 and the rotary engine. I decided to bring her back to life by doing a tune up. This might be the stupidest question ever but, is there a model # or anything for a type of NGK plugs or something. Do you buy plugs for a v8 and only use 4 of em? Is it hard to get plugs designed for 2 coils? (sorry im so stupid but like i said im just learning) Thank you |
at your auto parts store they should be ableto tell you. But I think it's like berq6 osomething like that. But I'll say it before else do search the website ok. Also mazdatrix will have answers for you.
|
thats partly the problem i searched the website and ill i can find is people just breifly mentioning that they changed there wires to new NGK wires but they dont go into the specifics. thanks
|
85 gsl uses br8eq14's i believe... something like that. Advance auto has them in their computers.. 5 bucks a plug.
|
12a engine br8eq-14 NGK
13b engine br9eq-14 NGK -as per the parts micro fiche- |
I thought that this was a thread about plug WIRES, not plugs.
I don't know if they are different for the diff. years, but mine is an 85 SE and the wire # for the NGK is RCZE97A. I would think that they are the same for the first gens. |
thank you Brainhsval,
your right im wondering about plug wires not the plugs themselves. How much were your plugs? Are you happy with them? thanks |
NGK's said above are like $20 for all four.
From my experience, they will most likely have double silicone wires at your local autozone, advance auto or whatever- which are good normal wires. thats what i have. They were like $12 |
You are right, the zone will have wires. However IMO and remember it is just my opiniun, NGK wires are worth the extra. I gave $55 for mine.
|
I have Accel 300+ wires that I scored from a 1st gen in a junkyard for $5. I love 'em!
|
I have a set of taylor 8.5 mm wires on my '84. They're a nice pretty blue, high quality wire. They cost a bit more, but I think it's worth the money.
|
First off, nothing is a stupid question. What I do is search the forums first and if that doesn't help I make a thread. Some people here just need to shut their damn mouths when they come on here and just blurt out SEARCH!!! The least they could do is just say HI and then kindly tell them they should try searching the forums for help. But anyway... /endrant
My 82 GSL, I use NGK BR8EQ-14. If you goto an auto parts store and tell them what vehicle you have they should have a listing of the plugs you can use. I always use NGKs because I believe they are of higher quality and they don't destroy our engines, hell, I've heard Mazda and NGK worked on these plugs themselves so they are specifically made for our rotary engines. You don't have to worry about gapping the plugs, you just stick em in and off ya go! For wires, I use NGK as well and for those I goto sparkplugs.com. No parts place here in this city carries them for some odd reason. And I've found it cheaper to order through these guys then it is to order through a store here in town. For the plugs, I just goto Pepboys cuz they are the only ones who have them in stock and if not, they can order them. Autozone doesn't even carry them neither does Advanced Auto. (For my area, anyway) |
NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM AUTOZONE. Soo many cars come into the shop with autozone parts (mostly ignition, starter, alternator parts) that are faulty.
In fact, My83 had wires from Autozone. They looked brandnew. Missed in the higher rpm. I swapped them for a set of BURNT FROM A FIRE factory wires from my 85 parts car. Havent had a problem. NGK or factory anything are the best low buck. |
Don't buy any electrical shit from aftermarket unless it's got a recognized brand name. I used OEM (that's the brand name) cap and rotor, NGK wires, and NGK plugs.
Now i need to find some power foam...... |
I bought an alternator from Autozone, brand new. Hasn't had a problem in 5 months or so. Although I did have a problem with the jackass behind the counter when I went to buy a battery for my bro's RX-7 insisting...NO I NEED THIS BATTERY NOT THE OPTIMA. He would not shut his fucking mouth, I swear I was about to jump his ass.
|
Well i had good luck with autozone in one situation. I went to buy a RL brake caliper and checker was some ungodly amount. Called napa and autozone and remarkably autozone was MUCH cheaper. So i went to checker and told them, they pricematched it and saved me a trip. Thanks AutoZone. It pays to check around :)

Talk about going off topic...

brianhsval, ngk wires are good but accel 300= wires are
much better. they have only 150ohms of resistance per foot and in tuner magazine show an noticeable power icrease over other brands. they also will last longer. rx7's are very tough on ignition components. the guys are all correct in refering you to ngk plugs they are the only way to go. i |
rx7doctor, never said NGK is the best. Did however imply that I would not use the Zone for wires. At least I wanted to leave that impression.
Yes, I have heard good things about Accel wires, not knocking them at all, I just have never had any other wire other than NGK. The guy asked and I gave him a part #. |
As others have said, your 1985 GSL RX-7 takes four NGK BR8EQ-14 spark plugs. DO NOT purchase any other plug for your engine. There will invariably be a listing for Autolite spark plugs. Please don't purchase them. If the auto parts store is out of NGK, you might try Nippondenso plugs, but I have very little experience with them, so I can't vouch for them. If the store insists on selling you Autolites, run away. More than one person here has destroyed their engines' internals with Autolites.

comment about wires
Sorry Brianhsval, I am new to this posting and thought I was addressing Dan young who asked the question. Still finding my way around this. Just a note though, iI have used both and have found that the ngk's after years would break down. I actually had them where they would light up the engine compartment.
Ngk is coming out with a new wire from japan, but has not been releaed yet. signe, rx7doctor |
have you guys ever heard of xact wires from advanced auto? I have them and they......well I don't know....I loose power at high RPMS. Can anyone suggest a answer to this porblem, but PM me Idon't often check threads for answers
