Spark Plug Problems

A friend of mine has a 1979 Rx7, that had a used engine replaced by a mechanic. He had some legal issues with the mechanic and had to go take the car from him. Through this whole process, it sat for a couple of years. We recently did the ATF trick and got the car started.

Now here is the problem we have. The upper left spark plug screws in the engine way too far. It never seems to tighten. We ended up turning it in just as much as the other plugs and leaving it there. The engine did run that way, but now it is starting to leak oil around the plug.

Does anybody have any idea what would have caused this? Also, can anyone think of a way to properly seat the plug without going through a rebuild?

Thanks.

you are probably using the wrong plugs. For example spark plugs for a 79-80 will have that problem going into a later engine. Don't ask me how I know

What is the brand and model spark plug you are using and what year is the engine?

I never thought about that.

I don't think he knows what year of engine he has.

He probably bought the spark plugs for a 1979 engine, not even thinking that there could be a difference between the various engines.

Yeah. If it's NGK, I bet you have BR7ET or BR8ET. Try BR8EQ-14.

We tried some BR8EQ-14 plugs this weekend, and they fit perfectly. Thanks for your help.
