Spark Duration:DLIDFIS VS 2nd gen coil
 

Has anyone measured leading spark duration with any of the different ignition setups used on 1st gens? I'm wondering if the DLIDFIS setup runs enough longer spark duration than firing 2nd gen leading coils to make any difference.

Any duration numbers from your scope/automotive multimeter would be great!

I'm not sure how long the spark duration is between the 1st gen coil and the 2nd gen coil, but I like this bit of logic: the 1st gen coil was meant to fire through a dizzy cap and then down to only one plug at a time. The 2nd gen (Leading) coil was meant to fire two plugs at the same time. I think that means the 1st gen coil, if used in DLIDFIS, might actually have a hotter spark because it doesn't need to spark through the dizzy cap. It can spend all the extra energy it was designed to produce, on a long duration into the plug. That is the nature of an inductance spark. Or I could be completely wrong. Anybody else want to add their .02? I know you want to;)

1st gen. coils fires much faster than 2nd gen coils when done w/ direct fire. a timing light will verify this statement.

okay, i'm not trying to be obtuse, believe me, but since the Gen II was designed to be used with direct fire it would not need to be as powerful (like Jeff said), right? so would this mean that the Gen I coils are BETTER for direct fire in terms of complete burning or am i missing something?

A little misinformation there. The 2nd gen leading coil fires both plugs just as often as the two leading coils of DLIDFIS do.

As it turns out, the E-core type coils of a 2nd gen are a better design than the oil filled of a 1st gen. They take up a bit more room though.

Has anyone here ever hooked up DLIDFIS using the trailing coils from a 2nd gen? If so, which ignitors did you use? Did you do any dyno testing with 1st gen coils and then with 2nd gen coils on the same day? Logically, the 2nd gen coils should perform better, but stranger things have happened. It would answer the question as to which coils are best for DLIDFIS.

yes wackyracer has shown it to me personally since i didn't believe him. tested both 2nd gen. coils and 1st gen. coils, and the timing light showed that the 1st gen. coils would fire much "faster" than those of 2nd. gen.

his cousin is running the 2nd gen. coils, and IMO and wackyracer's we would still stick w/ the 1st gen.
