Get dry ice, break it up into small chuncks and spread it all over the tar. Let it sit until you can hit the tar with a hammer and break it off. Any bits left scrape off with the scraper.

So where do you get dry ice??

coldy13 07-10-04 05:36 PM

I'd ask local ice cream shops if they can sell you some, or where to get it.

RotaryRyan 07-10-04 05:37 PM

We use to get it at the fishing bait place

Rx7carl 07-10-04 06:13 PM

Some of the Publix grocery stores carry it. Thats where I got mine.

I had a hard time finding dry ice when i was gonna do this. It was in the middle of winter, so I ended up useing an old chisel and hammer, pretty quick work, I guess teh cold weather made it brittle enough that it came off in big chunks. Weighed it, 25lbs, not bad I guess. But I removed mine in order to find and fix rust, not remove weight.

deeman111 07-11-04 10:43 AM

or you could warm it up... yeah it makes it a bit sticky but its just as effective and if you find the right temp you can pull off lots at a time with little residue.... rather be doing that in winter than playing with dry ice

I stripped the bituthane from the interior of a 280ZX once. I simply removed the carpet, then let the car sit in the hot sun for a few days. The interior got so hot that when I opened the doors and started peeling the stuff off, no tools were required.

you could heat it up, but i like winter and working in the cold, so it was no problem for me. I just hope it isn't too loud when I'm done....
