This is just Idleing, dont mind the fuel gauge typical broken gas gauge :)

Isn't this a sign that your ignitor is dead? I think the trailing but I forget which...

Yeah, tach gets signal from trailing side.

DivinDriver 09-04-11 06:26 PM

Or the tach wire could just be unplugged...

My Tach is kind of cold sensitive..the colder it gets, the longer it takes to start working. Anything in 60's or below it take time to warm up (68 = 2 mins.....35 = 20 min)

lol.... the KISS principal... Keep It Simple Stupid. Good point. :icon_tup:

Longhammer 09-05-11 09:42 AM

it worked fine one day then I opened her up to redline and after that it Idles just above 0 ? I have a slight miss as well but only at Idle its very small blip but its there :(

john smack 09-05-11 11:41 AM

Just had the same issue the other day, swapped in a new cluster and everything was fine.

Alex84GSL 09-05-11 10:42 PM

Now you can brag that you have a solid idle at 50 rpms.

Longhammer 09-08-11 08:51 AM

lol yes I guess I can, stupid rpm,s lol what are coils worth ?

john smack 09-08-11 10:10 AM

I have a good set, you pay shipping and they are all yours. I am in Fort St John so it wont be much

cshaw07 09-08-11 10:17 AM

my 83 looks like that at idle as well :( but at about (im guessing) 1,000 rpms it actually starts to go up in a linear fashion. Im in for finding out the actual problem!

that happened to me!

Now I've got a question about igniton. Yeah, rare I know. On the GSL-SE I've been dinking around with for the past couple of weeks, it has two wires on the trailing coil's negative terminal. One is the standard wire that goes over to the ignitor. The other is what appears to be a coaxial cable or some sort of shielded cable. I assume this is for the N304 ECU. Or is it for the tach?

I got this car as a rolling shell without an engine harness so I've had to play the probing game to find the dash gauge wires. So far I've successfully gotten them all to react except for the tach, which I haven't tried yet. Is there an easy way to test it?

Oh also since this is an 84-85 chassis, I assume it has to annoying fuel pump relay under the dash that inhibits the fuel pump unless it sees a tach signal ie the trailing ignitor has to be working. Well, I'm doing a MegaSquirt and a custom ignition with custom fuel pump wiring so the stupid relay probably isn't important. Anyway I just need to know where the tach wire is in the ignition harness before I have to probe some more. I'd rather leave all the factory black tape stuff intact because common electrical tape tends to go bad after a few years.

Longhammer, here's the Rockauto page on coils for an 85 GSL
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...&parttype=7060

Longhammer 09-26-11 09:49 AM

Well I swapped out the old coils and didnt fix the tack issue :( so other than a faulty tack what else would cause this ?

cshaw07 09-26-11 09:54 AM

when you shut of the car does the tach needle go below 0? when you rev up the car does it go up? i vote bad tach.

i would look for the other end by the ecu.
