what excatly is this on the roof? oxidation? (sp?)....fading? ive seen it on a few rx7's
one i remember for sure is directfreaks is exactly like mine .....is this fixable without a repaint?

try to rub it out or if not repaint it

try an abrasive rubbing compound. you might be able to rub it out but probably not. if it does work use carnauba wax

Looks like the clearcoat has broken down due to age and ultraviolet from the sun. Usually when it starts the rest of the clearcoat on the car is not far behind, so buffing it out and re-spraying clearcoat in the local area is only a temporary band-aid solution.

If the body is still in decent shape it is best to re-paint the whole car. If you do the prep work (sanding, removal of trim, masking, etc. The pros at the paint shop will do it for less than you'd otherwise pay.

Clearcoat has failed, what's left is the base coat and that is beginning to wear also. Compounding and waxing will clean it up, but a repaint is the only cure.

Clearcoat checking.......looks like my car when I got it.
Rubbing out will reduce the appearance of the white area,but yea,your paint is basically toast.

Looks like all the reliability mods are done. I'd say it's fixed.

Here is a thumbnail of my car. As you see the clear coat is coming off. All you can do is get a new paint job.

If the base coat has not deteriorated, i.e., there is enough 'meat' left in the paint, you can try color sanding to blend it in. Sand as little as possible on the base coat and concentrate on the flaking clear coat, feathering into the base. If you over sand the base and get into the primer, what have you lost other than time and materials. Start with 600 grit wet/dry paper and a sanding pad. 3M makes good pads for this that are soft, yet firm. Use plenty of water to flush the sanding dust away and to keep the paper from loading up.

Do not use folded paper and bare hands. It will streak from your fingers. If the 600 looks good, it will be dull and even, then step by step move up to 1000, 1500 and finally 2000 grit. Soak the paper in warm water before starting. Once you are done with the 2k grit, move on to the polishing/glazing compounds, then finally the wax.

Sorry, that doesn't look fixable. Best thing for you to do is tow it to my house and I'll take off your hands for 100 bucks. :rlaugh:
