Smog Exempt
 

What are the rules on Smog exempt cars?

I've got an '84, and here in California, it barely passes smog. If I do anything to it performance wise, it doesn't stand a chance.
How long (if ever) do i have to wait until it's "Smog Exempt" ?

Or does anyone know any mods or things I can do that will not harm emmissions much?

hey, i feel your pain... i heard that in another five years we wont have to worry, but im not sure how reliable that is...what part of SD are you from adam? i go to school in riverside but im from la jolla.

I'm in El Cajon for the summer, although I may stay here, instead of going back to Ramona where I usually live (Too much dirt and crap for my 7)

I went to La Jolla for July 4, man was it fun!
I like La Jolla, instead of every other car being a Mustang, like it is here, it's a Porsche, lol.

I heard that once our cars are 20 yrs old they are considered classic cars and are also smog exempt. I think some insurance companies give you 'classic car insurance' which is way cheaper but you cant put on a lot of miles on it. Can anyone confirm this?

But I also heard that they froze the year to 1973 or something like that... if it's newer than that, it's not exempt.

Although, the guy at the dealership immediatley asked when he saw my car if it was smog exempt...
First gen's weren't made till the late 70's, so that '73 or older thing is out... ( i think)

My 82 is smog exempt, but that's in Canada:) A big bonus to driving an FB.

I heard that in the UK, all rotaries are exempt because they're notoriously hard to pass, and they're such a small percentage of the motoring populatrion that it doesn't matter. Any corrobioration:?

IN Ohio, cars must pass up to 25 years of age when title is transferred, or every other year when registering (so it's up to 24 years if you keep the car) Emissions tests are good for one full year from date of test. So, theoretically, if I got a '79 right now, I could test it and have a valid emissions test for the 2003 registration, and it wouldn't need testing any more after that (assuming I kept it). So let's someone give me a '79 and I'll be home free! Brap braop brap brap!!!

my car is Canuck registered and in the province that plates it (Saskatchewan) there IS no smog testing - if it has 4 wheels and headlights you're good to go.

Believe it or not all I had was one bottle of Guinness... and half a pack of Winchesters (those cigarettes are like eating those little dessicant bags you get with film - dry you out real bad!)... after a day of working in the sun... and not having eaten anything since Thursday...

Anyway, yeah, emissions... I wonder if anybody's made a bridge port engine pass emissions? :) Long-primary exhaust with three cats in each pipe and three air pumps... that might be enough :D

The answer to that question varies by state, occording to state law. To find out, trying checking your state's dmv web site located here. If the info isn't there, you will have to give them a call and ask.

A good example is NC. According to their web site, a vehicle has to pass emissions inspection until it is 25 years old.

Insurance answers.....

First you will have to have more than 1 car to get 'classic car insurance'. Secondly just about any car can have this type of insurance if you simply ask for it. What this states is this. They will ask you if you put your car in shows or parades and such - say yeah :-)

You will not drive the car more than 3,000 miles annually and they ask for your odometer readings. Of course they don't watch this closely but if you have a claim and your way over the 3K annual limit they simply won't pay your claim.

I have 5 cars currently and 3 of them are on this type of insurance and its very cheap. I also set a 'Value' on the cars - a maximum total of like $15,000. That way if the car gets totaled I can have an estimate done by collectors and show what the car was worth FOR REAL and not by some insurance estimator.

I pay 30 bucks a month for a 1984 Hurst Olds, 10 bucks a month for a 1970 Cutlass and another 28 for a 1980 Trans AM. So for me its MEGA cheap. Of course living in Cali you can drive 12 months a year, in Michigan you're lucky to get 5 :)

Well, if you only get to drive each car 3000 miles a year, it's nice that there'd be only 5 months to drive it...

And to have three cars to spread around! That's 9,000 miles in half a year. You wouldn't NEED the other cars except for winter! :)

Then again, wouldn't want to drive such rare machines on the street... the Cutlass maybe, but definitely not the Hurst/Olds or what I assume is one of the Turbo Trans Ams that managed to not self-destruct in the previous 22 years :)
