Signs of Needing a Carb Rebuild
Greetings,
I don't know much about carbs, did alot of reading and searching but I couldn't find any real applicable answers to the signs of when I would need a rebuild. I have a 45mm Weber DCOE 2-barrel sidedraft. I'm thinking I need a rebuild because I'm getting these symptoms: -popping noises (like popcorn popping) when I take my foot off of the throttle from high rpms (4-6000 rpms) - a bit of a hesitation at low rpms (1-2000 rpms) when I accelerate (could be because of the physics of a 2 barrel?) - with the choke engaged, I have to pump the gas 7-10 times, crank 2 or 3 times and the car starts -extremely poor gas mileage, I'm talking about (if I'm lucky) getting barely 300 kms on a full tank of gas and I drive rather stingy daily I'm looking to rebuild my weber carburetor, I have ZERO experience in rebuilding carbs but I do have the patience and did some tinkering with cars in the past. Anyone with experience recommend that I do this on my own? Thanks in advance for your opinions. |
Theres alot of books on the weber. I'd suggest you get one. Worth it if your keeping the car/carb for any length of time.

Found 3 different books.
http://www.webercarbsdirect.com/technical_manuals I can't go wrong with the tech manual directly from weber right? |
Did this always happen? It sounds to me like it just needs to be properly tuned. Though you won't see much power that low in the RPMs from any rotary- especially with a two barrel, the hesitation you mention seems like an accelerator pump adjustment is needed.
Thumb through this for info. |
Do Webers have ap's?

Piston type, I believe.

Tried tuning the car last night doing the 'best lean idle' procedure.
Its strange, after I think I got the right idle speed inside the garage, I go outside for a quick test drive and notice that my idle speed is higher than what I originally thought I set it at. Setted my idle speed outside and now the car runs pretty good. Solved my popping when I let off the throttle theres still there a bit of hesitation. I'm thinking of changing the venturi, main fuel jet, air jet, idle jet sizes. Anyone know of a cool 45mm dcoe setup that worked for them? |
