signs of carbon lock

donot worry, this is not my engine..i was just talking to a kid that is having touble with his engine.. from what he tells me the engine has good compression, but when you get the car running it sounds like it looses compression plus has trouble idleing under 2k... also, he cannot start the car without spraying atf into the intake...

sounds to me like he has a bit of a carbon build up... what do you guys think? any ideas or thoughts?

tell your friend to try the atf treatment a few times

it worked for me

thanks all

jeremy 04-16-02 08:20 AM

has he not tried the atf trick? he must be trained in the way of the rotary. bring him before the council..........

riffraff 04-16-02 08:20 AM

that is what i did tell him.. i figured that since he needed to spray it into the carb to start the car, that there was a hell of a lot of carbon build up in there (that was not being broken up from the way he is doing it).. so i told him to put some atf in the plugs and do it that way

jeremy 04-16-02 08:35 AM

putting it in the carb will work fine. he just needs to let it soak for a while if its that bad. i'd say 2 days and rotate the engine a few times each day.

Lets use him for the diesel fuel experiment :D

riffraff 04-16-02 02:39 PM

hehe... i donot know him all that well (just trying to help the kid out) so by all means...

MIKE-P-28 04-16-02 02:46 PM

Oh well was worth a try :D

i would be the guinea pig, when my car gets to running right......... Only if you all pitch in, and buy a rebuild kit, if it messes it up:D LATERZ

Well, first of all, he doesn't have a carbon locked engine if it cranks. A carbon locked engine won't crank. When you turn the key all you here if a click or clunk. Carbon lock happens when a minute piece of carbon gets lodged in the apex groove and gets caught up in say a spark plug hole, orfus or port. It gets wedged so bad that the engine will not rotate. To fix the problem, some people rotate the engine backwards and others do the ATF trick. If you do the ATF trick, just make sure you are prepared to be consumed with white smoke - it goes everywhere. My advice to you would be to do this on a windy day, when it's blowing steadily away from you.

85.. i realise that he does not have a carbon locked engine, but i thought that perhaps it was on its way to being that.. his problem sounds to me like he has enough of a carbon build up that it will not crank without a little help (ie a little atf in the intake)

on boinger engines, when u change oil, you can pour diesel in, run it a while, then drain in to clean out all your sludge.... will this work on a rotary??????

jeremy 04-17-02 10:59 AM

uh huh huh, he said orfus.............

How can you tell when the wind is blowing away from you or towards you? :D

Here's a neat little trick that I've learned awhile back for cuttin' down the mosquito fogger effect of the exhaust:
Take some flexible aluminum tubing and foil exhaust tape and attach one end to your exhaust and the other into a bucket half full of water. Kinda of like an automotive bong I guess.

SuperPhly 04-17-02 10:47 PM

hahah, i'd have to record that rotary bong thing... that made me laugh... hehehehh

bubblin water... hehehe
