Siezed

I just became the owner of a 83GSL but it will not crank, the story I got was that the previous owner let it sit over the winter without using it and it froze. the radiator died, but the engine did not crack but it will not crank at all, any sugestions on what I am looking at to fix it, should I be able to just break it loose or will I need to tear it apart. Except for the engine, and radiator the car is in imaculate shape. Thanks

Timothy

Pour about 4 oz. of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid; the cheap stuff) into each of the two lower spark plug holes and through the primarys on the carb. Let it soak in for a few days.
Make sure you dont' have a locked up accessory (alternator or locked starter) that would prevent the engine from spinning. With the bottom 2 spark plugs out you should be able to turn the engine over by pulling on the belt.
If it still won't budge, take off the starter with the car jacked up and on jackstands. Now find a prybar or big screwdriver to pry the ring gear with. Use the tranny bellhousing as a fulcrum. Work it back and forth slowly and carefully.
When it feels to be rotating easily and smoothly, put the startere back on and fire it up. Take it for a spin around the neighborhood until all the ATF burns off (lots of heavy white smoke), and put in a fresh set of spark plugs.
Chances are the engine seals rusted and seized it up. If the car is going to be sitting for an extended period, always coat the insides with ATF or oil.
