Sick of searching: TII swap questions.

Alright, my friends have talked me into it- I want to do a TII swap into my SA.

Here's what I know so far-
I know I need a GSL-SE oil pan, and my 12a front cover. I know running the 12a front cover means I won't be able to use the TII OMP, but I'm already premixing, so not a problem there. I also am aware I need the oil pickup from the 12a to clear the oil pan.

I plan to run a Megasquirt for fuel and a 12a disty / DFLDIS for ignition so I won't be needing the harness. I plan to rewire the engine bay anyway.

I'll probably be buying the engine and trans together, so I'll use the TII trans, and I know I'll have to get the driveshaft shortened as well as modify my transmission crossmember.

What else should I know? Some of the stuff I read was kind of confusing, i.e. not typed very clearly. Do I have my bases covered here?

Searching has pretty much gotten me nowhere- lots of QUESTIONS but not many ANSWERS.

Take your time and keep reading.

Here is something that I put together. It is specifically tailored to the REW. It should get you started though. Many of the concepts and parts are similar between the two motors.

Hey mate,

There are a few extra things you will need to do in order to get the car going with the T-II motor.

If you are planning on using an N/A 12a front cover, you will either have to get a pipe welded on to it and use a piece of oil resistant hose coming from a flange on your turbo for the oil return or you are going to have to drill a hole and tap it for a barb fitting.

You will also need an exhaust manifold as the stock one doesn't fit with the turbo on it.

These are just little things you will need to consider, make sure you have a lot of extra cash as they always end up costing more.

I don't know why the link didn't show up. Good luck.

Don't forget the fuel system, you will need something that will put out FI level fuel pressure. If you want the shifter to line up correctly you will need to use the FB trans's shifter tower and shorten the shifter rod by 3cm to make it all work, that has been covered in a number of threads.
The FB speedo cable will work, you'll need a T2 throttle cable, and you'll also want to consider some kind of front mount intercooler. As Mrak said you will need to modify the front cover to drain the turbo oil into.
Since you are premixing and running a megasquirt most of the other concerns are taken care of..
Let us know if you have other questions. :)

Thank you sirs!

Yep exactly what 82transam said, I'd also recommend an aftermarket computer and to ditch the dizzy setup and go for a CAS.

Also you'll need a surge tank, fuel pump, pre pump (you can use your stock one for that) and I'd recommend an aftermarket FPR.

What do you plan on doing for the intercooler? Running the top mount without a scoop isn't ideal, you'll want a front mount otherwise intake temps will be quite high.

I was going to do FMIC. I know there's going to be plenty of fabbing in this project, which is not an issue to me.

I'm just in the "gathering information" stage at this point. I'd like to do it sometime in the not-too-distant future, but I want to get it all done within a short period of time since I'd be borrowing space in my dad's shop to do it. But alas, this year looks like another 12a year.

I forgot about the fuel pump issue. I should be able to get away with an inline Walbro I'd assume, right? I want to keep the dizzy just to "KISS". I might eventually go to electronic ignition however.

I'm not going to sweat the shifter location, since the interior is going to be stripped out for the most part anyway.

82transam 03-11-09 07:55 AM

If you are going to use an inline walbro you'll need a SE gas tank since it has the slosh baffle in it. The 12a tanks don't have any kind of baffling around the pick up, so if you have less than half a tank it could suck air when you go around a turn and go lean, if you're boosting while this happens your engine could be toast....
If you're up for a bit of welding you could do what me and a few others on here have done and modify a FB tank to use the FC's in tank fuel pump setup, nice and quiet, increibly simple and clean looking and it works great. Required welding on the gas tank so I'm not sure if thats for you or not, let me know if you want more details.

TheRX7Project 03-11-09 08:25 AM

I'll probably just find an SE tank or go aftermarket. Not that welding scares me, but sounds like a lot less of a PITA.

did i read somewhere that the gas tanks on later cars were slightly larger, and thus wouldn't be completely bolt on to an sa?

82transam 03-11-09 01:06 PM

Whoops you're right, i forgot he is talking about a SA here, yea the SE tank is not gonna work for you, you'll have to go in-tank or get a surge tank as mentioned above...
Sorry for the confusion
